DP Chip vs Better Exhaust system
« on: July 03, 2015, 08:19:52 AM »
Paging through various 4x4 mags, I've noticed there are DP Chips to help improve power and torque on my diesel Hilux. But I've also seen on this forum members talking about the legalities of the DP Chip. Then there are ads for better exhaust systems. Can anyone offer me some advice on either?

be careful putting a chip on the hilux, the hilux was susceptible to high fuel rail pressure with most chips fitted and going into limp mode.
in the last 2 years i think they have found a way to reflash the ecu on toyotas for power upgrades previously this has not been available as the ecu had locked codes or use the MTQ rapid chip it bypassed the fuel rail going direct to the injectors.
pretty much all chips give the hilux an awesome upgrade in power some just more reliable
note: most chips on the market alter/increase  the fuel rail pressure

There's lots of conjecture that chips are one of the causes for early injector failure and engine detonation within the D4D engine.
Virtually none about a 3" exhaust causing it....  Could all be hearsay, but I drive a Prado (shared engine with the hilux) and I won't be fitting a chip.

That said, the hilux's D4D is a detuned version of the Prado's D4D.  DPChip claims to put you up near the Prado's output so you're probably within the design parameters. But both hiluxes and Prado D4D's are going pop.

There's some info here on what you can expect from each on a 2007 D4D hilux:
3" exhaust only =  increase in torque of 38NM and a slight increase in power of 7.9KW
With Steinbauer chip added at Factory setting - another 35NM of torque and an extra 15.2KW of power
