I still can't work out if this is a serious thread or not.

If it is, I'd go the Lada
if you knew the OP author, you would know the answer is serious. If one of the options was a Lada, then we'd know otherwise;D

That story is about an owner who didn't put oil in the car.   How far would a Dmax go without oil?

I can assure you that a new D Max will make it between oil changes without a top up. If you think it reasonable for a new car to use 5 lites of oil between changes then I have some land you may be interested in.

I don’t think Patr80l was referring to the engine using 5L of oil between changes, but more like at it’s last service not enough oil was put in. Maybe the apprentice got side-tracked while putting the oil in and didn’t put enough in or the oil filter was loose and lost oil that way. Or maybe it’s 5 years old vehicle which has done 300 000 kms and never been serviced) In my opinion just too many variables to say this model burns oil.

If I could afford one it would be high on my test drive list.

For safety's sake, go with the Vitara. The step up in power from your current rig will be hard enough for you to handle.  8)

That brings the Lada back into contention.

No mate it was not like that. The lady was very upset with the car, she said it had 40K on the clock and they couldn't keep the oil up to it. I have no idea whether it is a common problem or a one off but you would think if it was a one off they would fix it under warranty. If I was looking to buy one of these I would be very interested to hear about this car, that is why I posted it. Research would reveal if it is a common problem.

I think you have discounted one brand just because of a bad rep. Surely this would be brilliant on sand and you wouldn't need a 1.8t camper!

Not sure about the fire reputation with that one and the consequences of it.

We have a Cayenne.  It's a capable 4wd  - the main problem is that the spare tyre is the run - flat emergency spare - which means if you are seriously travelling / 4wding you have to figure out where to store a full size spare - (we stand ours up in the boot when we are doing a trip but it does eat into your boot space)
