Think if you are after reliability then there is simply only 1 choice. Range Rover

Hahaha
I forgot about that
They have great taste in sports cars and can drive them pretty well .  As 4wders, they are excellent commentators.
:)
I had a Rangie when I was a young bloke. Fun truck. Great on the beach.

Great. We can't even decide between which model, and ball weight or tyre pressures  or if we need recovery points on the locomotive let alone attempting to decipher the gender assignment of the 1.8t camper. And whether a champaign glass can balance on its rear end.

D Max by a mile.

I was in a service stn in Nth Queensland a few years ago and a lady came in with a Cheyenne, she was looking for the dip stick because her husband told her to check the oil. I checked the oil for her and it wasn't touching the dip stick. She went inside and asked the guy what oil she should put in it and he didn't know so she just bought 4 litres of the most expensive oil he had. I ended up putting the whole 4 litres in and it just reached the dip stick. The car had 40K on the clock.

I have towed a heavy van (Jayco Hawk) with my Touareg in deep sand.    The Touareg is a Cayenne clone.   Mine had the 3.0L V6 TDI which had heaps of grunt (175kW).   With wide tyres and constant 4WD and various electronic traction controls it was very capable off road.   The lack of wheel travel and ground clearance on the steel sprung version was a problem in the high country but not so in sand.
Mine had a factory tow hitch and there are two recovery points front and rear.
Towing capacity is 3500kg and ball weight 350kg.   Can the other two match that?

How far to travel before you get to the sand?

Plus what will the vehicle be used for after?

It may sway you choice.

If I was seriously considering buying a Cheyenne for towing a camper and I read this I would take a much closer look at its reliability record.

Not know if this is a Pi55 take or not....  ;D
But
Don't these flash European Tugs have a lack of tyre side wall?
That to me makes them useless on the sand.

I'd say neither of the 3 are of any use on the sand. Doubt they'd like the clean out with leaf blower and hose after the trip.

Dmax by a mile.
Or a V8 Discovery 2. At least it sounds nice.

Actually if you are looking at a Cayenne, you can afford a Disco 4, so get one. You wont regret it.

When we were at Fraser 2 years ago there was a guy camping just up from us in his Porsche Cayenne plus a small van. The Island was very soft when we visited and while our Cruisers/Patrols had the benefit of ground clearance, he overcame the soft patches with pure grunt.

So if you can afford it, go the Porsche. Just don't use Low Profile tyres.

I'd rather a puss cat.. It'll pull a 1.8 tonne camper pretty easy but not sure about any sand driving..
Oh and it'll always stay on track..

I have seen them go off track. But I do like your thinking. Doesn't look as cool as the Porsche I just saw with 23" rims and a sweet note though

If you're looking to upgrade from ya Pootrol, then any of the 3 you listed should be an improvement on what you already have  ;)  ;D

I seem to remember top gear reviewed the porche and a bunch of similar pretend 4wd s like the audi and the BMW vw ect and they rubbished them all.
The audience did come out ontop as the best all rounder and the BMW was the worst

thats one thing to keep in mind the porche could have some weird size rim tyre combo that might make it hard and expensive to get when required

dont quote me on whos car it was, but i think it was wholesale automatics melbourne have a triton that they used in the 4wd action dvds has 18" or 20" rims on it and it went just about everywhere (that a triton could  ;D) (im sure he did the cape and fraser at least)also towing a camper from memory

That story is about an owner who didn't put oil in the car.   How far would a Dmax go without oil?

Not long, but a holden black moter (6cy) will idle for about 7hrs with no water and oil before is seized. I know as I did it, on purpose, once.

I'm sure Ive got some pics in a box somewhere that shows a  bloke, tunneling his way underneath  a Porsche Cayanne with just his feet poking out from under the back ..  on the up ramp to Eurong Beach Resort on Fraser years ago .. Prior to this he was doing runs up and down the beach yahooing and showing off with a car load of blond bimbo's...
Got towed out backwards by an  rusty smoky old Triton ute and told to leave it on the beach and walk in ... Snubbed the bloke that towed him out and the advice , then goose tried it again and bellied it in the same spot.. Everyone just left him there then to try and dig it out with his hands..
But on track your going to need something with clearance and grunt to haul 1.8 ton .. For the money of a Posche just overhaul anything that needs it and stick in an Big block Chev V8 and auto into what youve already got .and spend the change leftover on trips for the next 10 years .. ;D

I still can't work out if this is a serious thread or not.

If it is, I'd go the DMax.
