Calling all DARWIN Swaggers!

OK,
So we are up in a darwin for a few days and we've done Kakadu/Litchfield etc..

But we are really struggling with "things" to do or a MUST do list here in darwin. To be honest we're really struggling with the town in general.

I think there is a discussion about maybe a "car/duck? boat tour, the mindil markets and deck chair cinema.. But otherwise i'm stumped. Hopefully a local can say "you must" do this....

So thoughts?
And feel free to say "you must go here" when you leave... i.e down south..

Did you do the jumping croc thing on Adelaide River?
The mob that run out of where the old Humpty Doo rice fields once were, are the people to go with, smaller boats that get you up close to the crocs. I think it as near Fogg Dam from memory, but I'm not 100% on that dam name being correct. They even let the kids drive the boat on the run back to base.

Yeah we actually had a few awesome days in kakadu with this and had managed to spend some time with private senior locals on tours showing all this off (which was extremely enjoyable). We just said we are all croc'd out..

Go to the museum and have a look at the cyclone Tracey display, the recording made in a church in Darwin of the cyclone as it hit is very real. There is also a tour of storage tunnels that were used during WW2.

A couple of things to do:

-Sunset at the Yacht Club
-Breakfast at Laneway Cafe or Parap markets if it is Saturday
-Bombing of Darwin memorials and tunnels
-Afternoon swim at the waterfront backed up with some cocktails at Illido.
-visit Cullen bay and have lunch there
-mindil markets on Thursday/Sunday

Darwin is just like every other city. The magic of the NT happens once you leave it behind you.

The one i didnt have was cullen bay will look into that one..

yep the V8's are on.. And i'm not there. Sorry lost interest in the V8's years ago..

The museum and tunnels etc are something we've done or doing today.

Cullen bay has also a half decent sea food restaurant "Seafood on cullen" $40 per head all you can eat sea food buffet. Certain nights thou, its quite popular.

Have you been to Dougles daly hot springs? Good camping flushing lo even a shower pressure not great though but works. Has some great warm to hot (and i mean hot) springs. Depths from ankle to waist.  (Is a honest $$ box)
Then at night go "fresh" water croc hunting.

Late afternoon/Sunset walk and picnic along the Nightcliffe foreshore.
Ice cream/ coffee at the Cool Spot in Fanny Bay
Botanical Gardens aren't to bad.
Nightcliffe markets on Sunday for Brunch.
Aviation Museum.

Waterpark at the foreshore
Swim at lake Alexander,
First Sunday Blues at the pints club at Marrara ( first Sunday of the month)

Make sure you go to the crocosaurus in the centre of town!  :cup:
We love Darwin and always find things to do and places to go.  We just came back from a Kimberley cruise and were amazed at the airport parking.  We flew out of Darwin to Broome to start our cruise and left our car and camper trailer at the airport parking for 16 days for $110.  That was for a secure area and a free shuttle to the airport 450 metres away.  Hard to beat that at any other airport.  And for the record, put a Kimberley cruise on your bucket list.  We went with the Lady M and it was simply brilliant!   Kevin

Thanks for all the hints.
Most of these we've done or doing which is good.
Busy day today, watched a nice sunset yesterday avo.

Think kids will do the waterpark today at lunch and plan is markets tonight.

P.s on a side note, if you are going to Darwin stay away from the Howard springs caravan park. Big4 currently. They are the worst park managers and park we've seen and encounted in 2+ years of travelling

i was pretty disappointed with that place, we even did "The Cage of Death" whilst there also. The crocs weren't interested in anyone who went in the cage in the entire time we were there (which was over half the day waiting to get a go), it was a waste of money IMHO....a mate who lives in Darwin reckons locals call them the sleeping crocodiles. I'd make the effort to go to jumping crocs near Fogg Dam to see them long before I'd go to that place myself as far value for money goes.

That was a shame.  They all were so active when we were there and we have been to a few similar parks and have never seen so many active crocs, the big fella was going crazy when people got in the cage!  I guess they have days where they just want to relax, like us all.    Kevin

after seeing the lack of action of the crocs before we got in the water with them, I joked with Glen that we should go get some tins of tuna and open them in our pockets to see if that gets them excited...lol

Thats a shame, when we were there they were really good to us.

We liked the museums, wave pool, water park, mindil markets and shopping centres....but were are from Tassie so we don't really have shopping centres down here ;)
