Entertainment for camping
« on: June 11, 2015, 09:33:52 AM »
While I am awaiting delivery of my CT, my mind is racing with plans for how to set it all up, you know, alll the usual, battery, solar panels, fridge, stove etc.

It occurred to me that I have the ultimate entertainment unit to take camping.  It is something I restored myself a couple of years ago (it was found in a mess in a back shed).  No batteries or electrical power needed - ever!

Me too.  But we will also be staying at shared camp sites, so if the neighbours are rowdy...

Drinking beer and watching a fire is my idea of entertainment. (Then I wake up from my peaceful dream to hear my kids say I’m hungry or say what are we doing next)

If I'm not asleep or drinking by the fire, then watching swmbo usually keeps me entertained. When I get bored there, I have a sound bar that charges up on 12v usb plug and can Bluetooth my iPod or iPhone into it and annoy the neighbours.........
Then when I'm really bored, then I bring out the chainsaw and cut firewood for the evening campfire. A real campfire, not like the little girly one SJI had last week.........honestly it was like the Toyota Yaris of campfires.....

finally broke a promise we made to ourselves and bought a 12 volt telly/dvd for last summer camp - only watched an hour or two at night though, none of this blaring all day. sometimes the rain sets in for a few days though so we take a stack of dvds and books with us just in case - there are only so many punters with no idea about driving on sand to watch getting stuck...

I always have my e-reader with me, full of books to read.   I also find a small tablet computer to be a good way to watch a movie if the need takes us. You can put quite few on a memory card/stick.  Armed with some good books, I can actually really enjoy a rainy day or two whilst camping!

I've got a few things up the sleeve now to bring some entertainment.

1. Phone - It's music and movies all rolled into one. And it's easy to recharge. Music is generally what I use it for, but audiobooks are also a good group thing if you're just chilling out.
2. eReader - Fantastic way to avoid needing to take multitudes of books. I can load up 3-5 new books (or more if needed) before heading off and it takes bugger all space and lasts weeks.
3. Giant Jenga - I came across this from another group I went camping with. Pretty much cutting up some wood that you then carry around to play jenga with. Being larger it's more stable but can get quite tall! It's a great thing to have going by the camp fire at night and gets everyone involved.
4. Bocce - Great little game, doesn't take up much space - again designed for outdoors and when camping you've got a nice difficult field to play with.
5. Tight rope walk - a few rachet straps and a snatch strap strung between two solid trees creates a nice challenge :D

p.s. not me in these pics - they are of a mate from the queens bday weekend just gone by.

Cheers,

Matt

I've been camping probably 200 times in the last 10yrs and in all that time probably watched 4 movies ( none were suitable for kids !! ), no books, no games....but did plenty of sitting around a campfire, talking, drinking ( and talking more...mainly dribble ) and just generally relaxing...never felt the need to have to do anything while camping..

Had many people come camping and upon going home, have mentioned they really enjoyed the weekend because they did NOTHING....just relaxed !!

Best entertainment is getting setup first then watching everyone else get into fights setting up  >:D

Drunk totem tennis was fun too! Now SWMBO reads and I sleep, or play with the fire, or cook, or go for a walk.
SWMBO reminds me of a Prodigy song....

C amping over the long weekend at Levuka was interesting.

Normally you don't wanna hear the mucis from the camp next door, especially whne the guy is nealry 60. But I happenned to hear, over the roar of my kids, a song by Gordon Lighfoot that I love. Next song was another Gordon Lightfoot tune. So I caught the eye of the bloke and asked him to turn it up.............. he obliged me. We then listened to a few songs together whilst dinner was cooking on our respective campfires. Normally I am not alowed to listen to Gordon Lightfoot as SWMBO doesn't like him, so that is why I took the opportunity to ask my neighbour to turn it up.

Speaking to my neighbour the next day he said it was strange to find someone else who liked Gordon Lighfoot. I agreed with him and said my SWMBO hates him and I am not allowed to listen to him with her around. He laughed and said his SWMBO is not a fan either but lets him listen to it when he is camping. We both laughed at that as we both got to listen to music we both liked without hving to worry about our SWMBOs.............

Was funny at the time. Now, who has seen my Gene Pitney album?

Gotta say i had no idea who Gordon Lightfoot was as i read this, then i searched his name and realised i do actually know a couple of his songs.

yep - some (usually philistine non-campers) may that's sad having nothing better to do - but its fun...!

just as much fun:

 - watching people with no idea of how to drive on sand trying to get back out of an all-sand campground
 - watching people with overloaded caravans trying to get to a spot - one poor fellow unhitched and 'snatched' his van all the way around to his final spot - he is now dubbed 'ricochet rabbit'
 - an inebriated camper trying to set up his rooftop fold-out tent (especially when the strap breaks and he goes sprawling backwards off his running boards)
