What would YOU do in this situation?
« on: May 13, 2015, 09:47:08 AM »
Hi Swaggers team, I have a question for you and your knowledge will sway my choice.
I'm planning on a Flinders Rangers trip later in the year and probably need to carry some extra petrol. Not sure if this is the case or not? Help here too!
I run petrol/gas in my 105 series about 80 litres in each.
To carry more fuel I can either
A- get a dual jerry can holder for my rest bar. $350/450
B- get a roof rack and store jerrys up there $450-550
C- no of the above, won't need to carry fuel, theres plenty of fuel stops…
Please let me know what you would do…
Cheers.

Unless you only get about 50klms to a tank you'll be ok....

Again I think your expecting it to be as remote as the moon's surface...  It isn't!

Hi Mark, depends how far into Flinders you are heading but generally up to Blinman you will not need extra fuel. Fuel is available at Hawker, Wilpena, Angorichna and Leigh Creek/Copley. Not so sure about lpg but ulp no worries.

Guessing I won't be able to get lpg anywhere out there, so will rely on petrol only. That is maybe where my concern is coming from.

I took my petrol/gas 105 to the Flinders twice without the need of extra fuel.

2nd trip was out to Arkaroola too (ULP Available) and never had any dramas.

Fill your gas at Hawker and keep your gas full and drive on ULP you can easily top that up and have gas as a back up if your worried. You'll be fine though and I was towing our OB Jayco Hawk back then too.

Take a run up to Leigh Creek, shoot up to Farina if you have time, Great Wall of China, they're easily done.

Just a suggestion, but perhaps you need to consider your option A as a good idea.

2 x jerry cans on the rear filled with Port, could make the trip very enjoyable........

What would I do?  Spend lots of money on accessories I don't need, then enjoy the fact I have no money but my rig looks tough.

There is plenty of fuel in the Flinders. You won't have any troubles.

Have fun.

As a ten year old in the mid eighties we did lots of trips to flinders, on one trip we saw a bronco towing a box trailer with mostly petrol jerries.....quite amusing and we saw him enough to call him "bronco billy" never got to catch up but we assumed the bronco liked a drink.....

If you needed to carry more fuel (which it seems you don't for this trip) I would consider a roof rack as it would be more versatile.   You can carry more than fuel on a roof rack.

Well after some serious consideration and a red wine or 7………it looks like petrol won't be a massive issue. use petrol first and little bit of lpg if needed. get a alloy roof rack as you cash carry jerry's and othe rites a little easier.
Team, you've all done a great job. Gold stars for you all…..
Now hurry up October, i got to hit the road…

ps, this is why i like forums like this. ask questions and you her genuine real world/experience answers.
Thanks.
