We drove from Atherton to Burketown last July on the Savannah way. Easy and pleasant drive, some gravel but mostly sealed.

We did a trip up to Darwin a few years back, went from Normanton to Lawn Hill then drove The Savanah Way from there through to Darwin. It's a beautiful drive with a heap of great sights to see along the way. Here's a link to the trip report I did when we got back http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=17519.0 . I'd do things slightly different next time around as far as where to stay at a few places along the way and for how long, but for the most part we had a great time on that trip.

Look at the myswag 2013 Gulf Trip will give you some idea on planning.
