BEST inline filters for filling hose, any good?
« on: April 29, 2015, 09:50:36 AM »
Looking at getting a filter for the filling hose for up and coming trip. I've heard of BEST but does anyone have one? I only filled the tank once in Darwin at the van park. Bloke next to me lent me his but don't know what brand it was. Does anyone have a filter in their cold water tap inlet?
Cheers

Fuji
BEST filters are good, i have three now, one i had from previous camper trailer and two new ones that came with my Kimberley. BEST stands for Bacteria Eliminating Silver Treatment, they are easily back flushed and dont require any special storage.
The first one i used was for treating the river water from Lawn Hill Gorge river, and didnt suffer any side effects of dodgy water.

Angus.

We've been using a best for about four years and has done its job well. I've used it to fill tanks from cp's, council water points and creeks.
We also have one between the water tanks and cold tap in the kamper.
It's handy to have a short piece of hose to connect to the filter and feed into the filler on your camper.

I was on a trip where one (model 322H) was used to fill the tank from a tap that had nasty tasting bore water.

I was surprised that the resulting water had no nasty taste at all.

Can these be used at home? The website doesn't appear to promote them as such.

We have one for several years using it every time we fill up the tanks.

Water has always tasted great!

As the Kimberley has two tanks, we have two filters, filtering water from the tanks to the pump then taps.

Another vote for the BEST filter. They're good for 5000 litres. I just use mine to fill the tanks and it normally lives in the boot with the hose. Since it's double ended I wrapped a cable tie around it which I slide to the end where the hose is connected. This tells me which end I used last. When I use it the next time I connect the hose to the opposite end and flush it for a while before filling the tank. I then slide the cable tie to the end with the hose connected and it's ready for the next use.

We've been using a BEST filter for the past twelve months now, I've used it in some pretty dodgy water and it has done a great job.  I fill my tank up when we get home and can leave it for a couple of months before using it again and the water tastes great.  I highly recommend them.

Only ever used one from the pump to tap line....rarely ever fill up while away, but if I need to, usually plan it so it's "good" water from a van park/info centre/ servo / someones front yard !!!   ;D

We use it for filling the tank. Then have another filter after the pump for the taps.

Bought a second one at the last Perth caravan and camping show for $80.
Only used to fill the tanks, only a screen mesh filter on the pump after that.

You wont go wrong Wayne. I've been using the B E S T filter for about 7 years now and now on my second one. As previously stated they are good for 5,000 litres. Maintenance is flushing them out every few fills by reversing the water flow for approx. 4 - 5 litres then using it to fill your tanks again.

I've used mine to fill the tanks from a couple of creeks and water tanks where it was signed not to drink due to wrigglies but the filter took everything out of the water and made it safe for drinking. Haven't tried it on muddy water to see whether it cleans it up though. I always use the filter to fill from home and it seems to take out that nasty fluoride smell too.

Award RV have them on the Burwood Hwy.

Cheers

I cant find the recommended flow rate, but I do remember reading that the slower the better, Gives the carbon a chance to work.
Using the tap it takes about 20mins for 110L so around 5lpm.
Just emptied and cracked the drain plug to check today and no sediment in the tank so I guess  ??? the membrane is working.
I have marked the direction on mine and only use them one way to fill, then back flush when at home.

Got mine the other day with the brass hose fittings and extra hose. Looks well put together. After an initial flush out to get rid of the carbon build up the water tastes clean. First real test will be in a couple of months when we take it away but I'm sure it will be a great addition.

Cheers,
Matt
