Long term travel kimberley kamper
« on: April 25, 2015, 07:37:15 AM »
Hi Everyone,
I'm wondering if anyone has travelled long term (year +) in a kimberley kamper? Did you have issues, was it enjoyable for everyday living etc? we currently have a KK 2007 platinum & absolutely love it, however we are just not 100% sure it will suit us for long term travel for 2 adults 2 kids (7.5 & 9).
Thanks, Lani

Deleted. Need to read better :(

Where is my glasses?

Have you been away for long holiday, say a month, in the camper? Long term I would be concerned with kids education, communications, location and weather.

Cheers

Shane

Hi Shane, not sure what you meant at the start of your post....

We travelled to Cape York over 4 week period & it was great but just not sure about a year or more in it... Kids education we are not worried about, weather.... Well you just can't predict that one!

Do you have a Kimberley & have you travelled in it?

Cheers,
Lani

Have to disagree there. Youll have the time of your lives and the kids will thrive, or at lrleast ours have.

Personally, the KK's small floor space could be an issue with the 4 of you. You'll have days when you all just want to lie around reading etc.
We had a 9ft soft floor and that worked for us, but whatever you decide to travel in you will never regret it.

Hi Lani,

I don't have a KK but have travelled a lot with kids and camping. I think that your family would get a lot from the travel and only encourage it. You can travel with less or more depending on your  personal choices and finances. The issues I was raising were more to long term travel itself.

Location: are you thinking about a lot of remote area or a mix of urban and rural? This affects a lot of things like access to health care, education, communications, social contact for kids and parents, etc.

Weather: being stuck in a small space in bad weather loses its appeal after a while especially when everything gets damp and wet. Will you have the ability to move location or obtain temporary accomodation such as a cabin?

Education: No doubt travel broadens the mind. My kids have travelled a lot around Australia and overseas. But there are legislative requirements regarding attendance that need to be addressed. Can you home school and do you want to?

Communications: essential for safety but also social contact with family and friends. Maintaining those relationships helps ease the return to a "normal" life.

Other: there are a myriad of other questions to think about, but as I said I am not sure the KK is as big an issue as some of the other questions.

Looking forward to seeing your photos of your great adventure.

Cheers

Shane

Do you guys have the extended bedroom at the back, or were you just going to roll out a mattress or bunks on the hard floor?

We have swags for the kids & also a throw tent for longer stays... Our camper unfortunately doesn't have the kids room   :-[

I think you'll make it work.

Depends on a lot of factors. How long are you staying at each spot. Lots of overnighters? Longer stays as a majority?

Size of your awning? Is it the Kwik or extended? That will make a bit of difference in the living space for longer stays.
