Buying synthetic winch rope from ebay. Is it the real deal?
« on: April 21, 2015, 06:20:55 PM »
Hey guys, I'm looking at upgrading the steel cable on my winch to synthetic rope. Research has led me to Ebay & the pricing is very attractive. My question is, is it the real deal? For example:-
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Dyneema-Winch-Rope-Sk75-Synthetic-Cable-10mm-x-35m-4WD-Recovery-Offroad-Warn-/161166273404?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item2586422b7c

As a comparison:-

Any feedback would be appreciated?
Cheers, Mike.

I bought one for $120.00. It was great, never broke, had a patrol bogged in front of me on a slippery rainforest track, utilising a snatch block it was pulling my 105 up the hill.

I have both, a genuine Dyneema rope that I bought from the US, cost a bloody fortune , and a Ebay Dyneema rope .

I have used both of these rope in many recoveries, but, I have managed to break the genuine rope once, never broken the Ebay rope.

The ropes when new looked the same, ( both were 10mm ) but the genuine rope was softer where as the Ebay rope was stiffer.

cheers duggie

I've got a couple of ebay ropes, and one genuine one.  Never had to use any of them in anger yet but I can't see any appreciable difference between them.

I have had both and at the moment am running a Viking rope from the States. It is going strong with little wear although the rock guard I have on it has a few marks on it mainly from where it goes through the winch block occasionally. Although not cheap now due to the Aus $i would probably replace with something similar if needed, http://www.vikingoffroad.com/3-8-x-100-viking-offroad-winchline-orange-w-tube-thimble-hook/

The cheaper ebay rope had never failed me but it seems to loose it rope like shape and the strands loosen up making it much thicker than the one from the states. It is now a spare or extension if needed

Only difference I can see is one is blue, and the other is orange.  Diameter, stranding, texture, all looks the same.

On another note, what is it with ARB and the likes now recommending people go back to wire rope instead of synthetic?  How can they be serious about this?

Old man is in the market for a winch, so he did the tour of all the usual shop fronts.  The guy at ARB told him that wire rope is better and he shouldn't bother with dyneema.  Also told him that roller fairleads are no good for dyneema as well.

You can imagine my response when he told me.
