Flies - best solution
« on: April 20, 2015, 04:59:57 PM »
Just about to head out on a grand trip and have been seeing that the most common topic after the scenery seems to be the hoards of flies one needs to battle.

What is the nest solution - fly veil or chemical.

Eat breakfast before the sun is properly up, and dinner after it goes down.  Stay in the car a lot during the day.

That way at least you have a hope of not eating too many of them.

I would choose a net over chemicals, however I've found that either are only effective to a certain point. While you can't stop flies, you can change your reaction. If you can find it in yourself to shoo the most pesky ones, and tolerate the masses, you might be able to concentrate on the other more enjoyable aspects of the great outdoors.

I base this on 6 years living and working in Central Australia, I spend alot of time outside, and out bush.

We have used Rosemary and Cedarwood Ointment that helps but don't apply above the eye's or rub your eye's. it is quite good. Barnray

If you go down the fly net route purchase them while you are in the big smoke or expect to pay five times the price in the bush, or if you already have them ignore what I just wrote.

It wouldn't be australia if you didn't have 20 flies with the last one trying to be first to make love to your facial orifaces

.... not sure about this advice.

Flies should be avoided / eliminated / terminated..

Remember that when the little critters are walking across your food; or doin the chopsticks dance in one spot on your food...  they are actually vomiting on your food; and in the process creating a mini acid bath; so its easier for them to draw in, and digest whatever you are about to put into your own stomach....

Yum Yum!

Power to those whom may not have got a lot of illness from fly vomit - but remember these things will have done (just what was described above) - to some rotting carcass; or bit of excrement etc - which may be just outside of your campsite somewhere...   Yuk!      Apart from the "fly food value"... maggots have to live somewhere...

Dysentery aint no ride in the Gondola - for sure....

You get out and in to the world -- you take more @#&$. …You climb a little higher, ..you take less @#&$.  …Till one day -- you're up in the rarefied atmosphere -- and you've forgotten what @#&$ even looks like….  Welcome to the layer cake son.

* Permethrin your clothes ( really good for tics and mosquitos but also helps with flies) - http://www.amazon.com/Sawyer-Products-Permethrin-Clothing-Repellent/dp/B00MA950E0 has reviews of a specific product but permethrin is generic
