Disable Paywave

Not wanting to create a discussion about paywave, yes or no.
I am wanting to know if any clever folk have found how to disarm the Antenna feature on the new type of paywave cards we are now getting.

Here is how I did the old cards. From the chip are a several wires in between the 2 layers of plastic. I just fixed it with a small flat blade screw driver and for 3 years had no paywave.


New cards do not have these lines which act as an antenna. Has anyone found how to disable the new system?
All the info I have found on the net so far is for the old systems.

Yes, I called the bank, I'm sure you know how far that got me......

Can you not order cards without the chip?
You could keep it in one of those travel sheath things if there's no other alternitive

Be interested to know too, hate it when the paywave thingy auto detects as your cards put in to use the pin number ..
Had asked the bank to disable the paywave but for some reason they didnt / couldnt so now we are stuck with it .

Banks won't disable.
I know there's some guys working on the new ver of cards to shutdown.
I also hate the damn things. People just waving my card before I even see the cost.

A mate of mine just used a hole puncher on his card.
Card still works but not the paywave.

This method works well on cards such as my old card pictured above, there are many youtube videos showing how.

Hammer in the right place
Wrap the card in foil/ Mu-Metal- they use RFID which requires power transmission from the scanner - this supposedly blocks it
Put the card in a pouch wrapped in foil/Mu-metal
Get an RFID shielded wallet
Not worry about it. Its far easier to get your card details from ATM or POS skimming than walking the streets with a scanner

I love using the paywave feature but I still carry my cards in a RFID shielded wallet.  But it is like all things fraud/stealing related.  You can get all hung up worrying about something that might never happen to you.  I got the shielded wallet when we went overseas last year and my wife got a shielded handbag.  Out travel agent got a big laugh when we told him as he is also a travel insurance agent and he said he has never had a claim where a client has had their cards scanned and money stolen. You hear lots of stories and you should be aware and we did feel better for taking the precaution.   Kevin

Still isn't for our style of cards as we have the chip in it, the US doesn't have this system.

I think I found it, it is there still, but need a microscope to find it.

Just need to see it better then shall try to make the cut.

Mate, not so sure about the security. They're actually quite easy to hack.  The credit card companies just accept liability for fraudulent transactions thus 'protecting you' as long as you follow their procedures when reporting. They accept a small loss in their total transactions.

You could use cash,  one of the guys I used to work with would knock off early every Thursday to go to the bank and withdraw cash over teller with his passbook, I think he even used cheques.   
Me I love pay wave.

There was once a video on youtube, can't find it now, a TV NEWS in the states guy went into a shopping centre food court with a IT security specialist, they set his lap top up and card printer.
He went for a walk past someone and scanned the cards in her purse.
Printed the stolen ID's on hotel door cards.
Went and bought some lunch.

In the time being, staff from the NEWS show followed the lady, got her to watch what they did from the cameras.
It too just a few mins.

The other battle I have with the bank is the no need for Pin number caper for sales below $X value.

I have had money stolen before, yes I got it back, but it was grief which the card folk do not compensate for. So, to save myself the same pain, I will prefer to take my own security measures.

Going to test my new cards today with the paywave disconnected.

I too still use cash for a lot of stuff. I got caught out once, just returned from 3 months OS for work, whilst away, my 1 card was stopped, I found this out at the checkout with a trolley full of food to pay for. Lucky a neighbour was there to save the day.

My SIL still uses a passport and goes into the bank, doesn't have cards or Internet banking.

My issue with Paywave was that I had a personal account and work account on the same physical card. Everytime I went to pay for something the Paywave would scan and it would automatically deduct from my work account even if it was a personal purchase.

Had a "discussion" with the bank and they issued me a new card, just a debit style card with no Paywave or Visa abilities. So far so good!

Have just received my new replacement credit card- with its paywave facility- which I so do not want!!!!
All I wanted was a new replacement care without paywave- the bank was adamant this can't be done. As a customer, we have absolutely no choice.
Apparently it is determined by Visa/ Mastercard - not the banks. If you want a credit card, paywave is a non-negotiable add-on.
And transactions have a $100 limit- a card in the wrong hands can be seriously trashed even in just an hour at $100 a pop!
Apparently the banks are getting a lot of complaints from people just like me concerned about security...... hopefully it is a shortlived fad!

Well I have somehow managed to disable the paywave on my card. Don't ask me how but now it just does not work anymore all of a sudden.
What a pain, now I will need a new card.

That's incredible to think law makers are going to listen to those who know something about it and react accordingly.
I have a relo who works at a bank and she is constantly being asked how to remove the paywave.
