Anzac Day
« on: April 14, 2015, 12:26:00 PM »
Hi

My surf boat crew are doing this on Anzac Day. Quite a logistical effort from Kingscliff but well worth it. My grandad was one of the first landed at Gallipoli and very very lucky to live to tell the tail.  My kids are involved also as well as local schools with the wreath making. Gives me goose bumps.
And in true anzac  spirit I'm under duress as I've held off a hernia operation until I row!!! Small price I reckon.
Please come down if your near northern beaches.

Here is Broncos11 grandfather. One of the first in & one of the very last out. His last order was to destroy all the comms in the trenches, His C.O. (Bracegirdle) ordered him to leave his rifle, pick up an ax & destroy all comms!
(Now we know where Dave gets his dress sense from ;D)
Good on you Mate. Hope all goes well & say a few words & maybe a few tears, for me.

Good luck and great to see that more and more people are getting involved.

The school my girls go to are having a camp in the hall ( only the grade 6) before they go to the dawn service.

My daughter is busily practicing for the Anzac Day parade at her school where she will be performing the last post and Rous.

I have  read on Kingfisher resort site that there will be a service being held at the Maheno this year 10 am,The ships bell will be bought over from New Zealand by school children from the town of Maheno ..
Would say dawn service at Waddy is  still on as per Fraser Coast chronicle  ..http://www.frasercoastchronicle.com.au/news/anzac-day-services-and-parades-on-the-fraser-coast/1841492/

Hmmmmmm,

5m swells on the Wed/Thurs forecast!!!!!!
Not conducive to an inexperienced crew and sweep and me with hernia!!!
Dare say they'll have a contingency plan if needed.

Will march at Pottsville with my daughter this year.   Grandpas five uncles all served and four made it home. One died at Gaba Tepe and was not recovered so is there still.

My wife's side lost two and the third spent most of his time recovering from syphillus. LOL.

Dawn service at Kensington RSL, followed by gunfire breakfast.
Then, for the 31st year in succession my brothers and I will carry my dad's unit banner (8th Div AASC).
Very sad that the 'red caps' have decided to 'acknowledge' the centenary of ANZAC by relegating the WW1 unit banners to the rear of the march, and to BAN all descendants from marching behind them.
In particular I am deeply saddened that this will mean that there is no-one to instruct the scouts, guides, etc carrying the banners ( who do a fantastic job) to lower the banners after the saluting dias as they pass the Eternal Flame and wheel in front of the Shrine.
As, from the inception of ANZAC Day, the entire point has been to honour and remember the fallen, it is extremely sad that these banners are no longer lowered, as they were when returned unit members were still alive and marching, and as they are still lowered by units from WW2 onwards.
For the past 10 years or so I have instructed those carrying my grandfather's WW1 Unit (21st Battalion) when and how to lower the banner. Unfortunately I won't be allowed to do that this year.

Just waiting on an update of beach conditions tomorrow and plan B as big seas have left no beach at Collaroy. Bit of a problem when trying to beach a 100 surf boats!!!!!
I'm praying that they can, along with council, work out a way to still do original plan as it's an awesome concept. Also a Long way to tow a bloody surfboat to have it parked on footpath.

We will be at the dawn service in Numurkah tomorrow to everyone who served we give thanks. My Pop served but never ever talked about it. I have his victory medal here that he gave to me one day just because. I treasure it and though I don't have the ribbon I have it on a chain and will wear it tomorrow.  I might talk to our local RSL about if there is a way to get the ribbon from somewhere. There are a number of places that do this, some a lot more expensive than others.
My local Army Reserve Battalion blokes know which aren't a rip off. I'll find out for you.

There is a crowd that advertises in the services magazine that do this. They will also make copies as for other family,  I'll look too.  One of pops medals hangs by a black ribbon that he used as a replacement. I kind of like it like that as that's the way he wore it for many years.

This is from one of the military mags my son got. There is others that advertise in the war memorial mag. No idea on costs.
