Employment Opportunities Thread

Hi

Not sure if this has been raised before, I did do a search and didn't see anything, but was thinking that an employment thread where business owners etc looking for employees could post??
I'm thinking that in current climate, any avenue that gives genuine Myswag people looking for employment another resource would be very beneficial?

Seriously, I'm an elect fitter, have worked as a mech fitter for a short time, worked in factories and been a labourer......have forklift and dogman tickets....just today did my white card....have workcover tickets for front end loader, excavator and bobcat......but every job I look at, they want 5 yrs experience........even for a factory worker ??

And bluffing is important as well as perfecting the art of walking with purpose. Other than that, it's a walk in the park. You almost wouldn't need a wage. According to my boss, the mere fact of being able to turn up for a job on monday should be payment enough.

I sometimes think what I would do if I became unemployed / *went bust / *lost the lot...

The last 2 are there (*) - because I have been self employed for approx the last 30 years - and thus if the worst happens - there is no "golden handshake" for me...   no $400K super to be handed   .. no redundancy payments...  I just probably have the banks take my house; and that's about it...

Anyway - when I think about if I became unemployed - I think back to what a mate of mine did when this happened to him back in the 1990's...

He was a manager at a suburban Franklins Supermarket - and worked so hard; and was treated like a dog so much; (as is the way in some cases with line managers in grocery chains....)   "yea - if ya want ya $50K - $60Kpa - we want blood"....

Anyway - he was laid off...    I remember the next week he was at a weekend shopper garage sale...  Bought himself a cheap; clapped out mower and and line trimmer...

Started working his guts out doing people's yards...    Eventually building himself up and up...    One time my mate told me he had just finished a yard when this guy walks up to him and tells him he is going on an extended holiday - "and mate - here is my whole list of customers .. you can have them all for free ... just look after them"...      I can see that you are a very hard worker..

Anyway - my mate eventually built up his business; branched out into tree looping; and now does landscaping... and has become far more successful that he ever was at Franklins

He always had a terrific attitude and was from very humble beginnings...    (Him and his brother and sister - orphans; all raised together with a loving foster mum...)


I hope I would have the guts to follow his example...

Chatting with a guy today who had been laid off 2 months ago in Sydney. Set himself up an UBER account and now drives around Sydney looking after customers not wanting to use Taxi's.

Ergon have expressions of interest for apprentices that ends in a few days. I'm assuming they're linesmen, electricians & maybe communications.
Never too old to learn & it's not a bad paying job. I'm pretty sure adult apprentices would be mid to high $20's now, with overtime & other benefits if you have a crack.
Not sure it will interest many, but it may interest someone.

Good on ya.  Trying to mow my grass huh.....

All jokes aside, when we arrived here 4 and half years ago,  everyone said we'd struggle to establish a mowing run from scratch, as there was already about 7 guys here doing it.

I started up coming into winter and by Xmas of that year, i was running with 60 customers.
These days, I run 70 regulars and around 20 to 30 casuals that I only mow for when they are away. I have to have someone move away or pass away now for me to take on a newbie.
I'm 55 years old, a younger person could do an extra one or two a day and make a killing.

I didn't accept it wouldn't work when I started. If you google it, Tin Can Bay and Cooloola Cove (The only spots I mow in) are not very big in size and I reckon another mower man could still do ok.

Just to give you an idea of how many we have here mowing.
1. Art of Grass. (On my own)
2. NJH Mowing. (Him and his wife)
3. Rob and Dale Mowing. (Him and his son)
4. Kev Morgan Mowing. (Him and his daughter)
5. Green Thumb (Him on his own)
6. Trap A Handyman Mowing. (On his own)
7. Jason's mowing (On his own)

We also have about 3 "Beer Bob's" who maybe mow around 6 properties each for beer money.

The point I need to make is, I bought myself around $10,000 worth of gear and just went for it.
There is no right decision or wrong decision to be made.

Just make A DECISION and then go hard and it will become the right decision all by itself. Stuff looking for a job, create ya own.

My best week ever. $2,180 worth of mows in one week. 

If i'm not home 2pm, its a pretty big day too.

My business, my rules, my hours.

My clients are all regulars too, ie: I mow it when I feel it needs it.
I don't do overgrown crap that's been let go for weeks and weeks and I refuse to do  real estate work.

I did get offered a position working at the marina a few yeas back, but knocked it back because I make more mowing.
The reason it was offered, was because the manager there knew I was a good worker, as he saw me most days at various properties.

I work in the industry and finished my apprenticeship back in 2002. Since then I have had a few different roles with the same company, one of which was in a training centre.

They do like mature age apprentices and if you have a previous trade all the better (that is not to say the young guys don't get hired). I think it is very close to $30hr for mature age. If you are keen and work in one of the more remote depots and get called out to help the oncall guys you can do very well. I herd some of the apprentices making $80,000 for the year.
 
It is a fantastic job and at the moment there is some downsizing (1400 to go from my company alone) but they will always need to change poles etc.

Jump at it guys but a heads up the competition for the jobs is fierce. I have mates that applied for 5yrs straight before getting on. That said it is a job that will last forever.

For those looking for a start, You will have to spend a few bucks first, Go do a RSA  and RCG course ..[ responsible service alcohol and responcible conduct gambling ] and hit up the local pubs n clubs in a 50 k radious even if its not a lot of hours to begin with  it puts you in contact with all trades and sectors of possible employers ..
Ive found with resume's etc most get thrown in bins .. Find the name of who hires and fires at a company and get a meeting with them, LIE, CHEAT, BLUFF  to get a face to face chat [ yes it could annoy them, but it shows your keen ]  after putting in application after application thats what I did,told him I'd do anything and can start straight away, got the old we have nothing and be in touch if something comes up ..... 3 days later I was signed on as a kitchen hand [ good pay too ]  >>>> forwards 22 years / worked in just about every role except senior management .

Cheers for the endorsement & encouragement for any of the guys or gals on here that are looking for a change. Remote places are definitely the go, I started in Cunnamulla, since then the zoning has changed to encourage people to live remote. Remote places are capped at $130 a week rent & vary in holiday benefits plus a 9 day fortnight. The biggest bonus is a new office almost every day with plenty of four wheel driving.
