Cyborg Rear Powered Draws for the Patrol

Well I finally got off the couch and built my draws. I re-designed them 3 times as I went but at the end, including all materials and electrical stuff, cost me $2000+/-.

My first build I built a draw underneath which made the fridge sit too high. I then had to design the fridge slider go the length of the rig as width wide wouldn’t work.


On the second build I didn’t include the battery/electronics area at the back of the 3 high draws so I went out and brought all the wood again for the third design.


The biggest problem I had was trying to get a 110lt Evakool fridge to fit but just made it in by a mm. The whole build only had mm in it but with a few minor tweaks, she fitted.

So the third build we got the base happening and built the draw side of things.








Then I added the draws and fridge slide and fitted the fridge just to make sure it was ok.


I did built everything first (just holding it all together with a few screws) and did a test run. Once I knew it was the final build I glued and screwed everything.

With everything starting to come together I got to carpeting everything.








The next morning (Monday) I did a few touch-ups and she was ready to go in the back of the patrol. I did a ring around about 0930 but everyone was at work. As I am a very patient person I carried (well dragged) those draws out of the house, down steps to the back of the rig.

As I had built them with mm to spare there was no way I was getting them into the back of the patrol by myself. Again I did another ring around to others that came to mind but it seems people like to work weekdays? So since I am a shy person I waited at the end of my drive.

Within minutes I saw a car driving up my street, so I stood in the middle of the road and waved them down. The driver wound down his window to see what was going on and I explained I need a hand to get the draws into the back. The good bloke pulled over and gave me a hand.


Then it was time to get a side shelf happening, ready for the power panel.








With everything bolted down it was time to get the electrics going.


With the batteries I have the main car battery 75/80ah and the second battery under the bonnet is an AGM 106ah battery. My third battery is another AGM 113ah which is installed behind the rear draws. I have wired it so I can use each battery with 12v sockets, USB, Merit etc. and the 240v just comes from the third battery.

For the 12v stuff I have a DC-DC CTEK D250s Dual charger with a Projecta 1000W pure sinewave inverter. The batteries have a linkup feature so if needed I can join them together, if the main battery ever dies.

For the 240v electrics ( I have 6 x power points) I used a RCD just in case.








I wired up the rear panel with the side Baintech panel running off the second battery under the bonnet and the power points with the cig sockets and merit sockets on the third battery. The one cig socket at the rear is already wired to the main starter battery.




So the final project turned out grouse and serves my camping and work needs







Yes I am stilling paying the price for using the dining table. I don't know why women don't understand nor do they forget!

Looks like a nice clean build, but...

Last time I looked NHP Mod6 RCD's weren't double pole, so aren't compliant to AS 3001 requirements.  They also are a type AC RCD, so not suitable for use with inverters, and if you read the Projecta instruction manual it specifically asks for a Type A which is suitable.

Also notice you have the GPO's sitting nicely beside the ciggie outlets - is there much segregation between the 240V and the 12V wiring?

Did the electrician give you a certificate of compliance for this install?

Couple of thoughts.  Is that a Haze battery?  They don't like vibrations very much.  I have had a couple fail in both the ute and camper.  There are better options but if you are getting them cheap or free only you can decide if you want to be stuck without power in a remote location.

How are you securing the fridge?  Would also suggest spinning it around so the motor is to the front of the vehicle.  Makes access to the fridge easier.

All jokes aside……………, thanks for the information. I got my sparky mate to do the wiring and an autoelec to do the 12V. The 12v was kept separate from the 240v wires and run in separate conduit.

I think Projecta says for “added safety” it is recommended to use a type A but works 100%. Also have the inverter grounded and a rod for the ground.

Yeap it's a Haze. I haven't had any dramas yet with the first one, which is under the bonnet. I am planning in getting the Lifeline GPL-31XT (120amp) for under the bonnet and at the back of the draws when/if the other Hazes fail.

The fridge has two 250kg anchor points (front and back) that it is anchored to. If you look at the last pic with the key cutting machine you will see one of them.  Can't turn the fridge around as the fridge only opens one side. It is what it is :)

Go and slap your sparky mate because he gave you the wrong RCD.  You also don't need, or want, an earth stake to use with the inverter.  If he says you need one, slap him again.
