hey Reever
funny that i was just on tmr qld looking for something else and come across over hang it said should not over hang more than 3.7 mtr i  spect that's from the axle so should be fine as per anything on tmr had to read it 3-4 time before it started making any sence
edit; you must be able to see the no. plate from all angels and the no. plate should be no higher than 1300mm

now for the rant
law states its your responsibility to know the rules
so why the frig is it so dam hard to find them and if you do find them you need to be super human to understand them
have been looking for the legals on carrying fuel  on rear bar of a caravan. i cant really find it, so it must be legal to do so
what i did find was was you can carry 250 ltr as long as its not in the cabin (nsdt)
just wanted to voice my disappointment in the system

went back to searching the fuel carrying and come across overhang again

21.2 Rear Overhang
Dog Trailers

Rear overhang must not exceed the lesser of 3.7 metres or 60% of the wheelbase.

Semi-trailers

Rear overhang must not exceed the lesser of 3.7 metres or 60% of the distance between the point of articulation (POA) and the line from which the rear overhang is measured.

Other Trailers

Rear overhang must not exceed the lesser of 3.7 metres or the front load space.

http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/vsb1/vsb_01_b.aspx

still unsure what it means wtf ?

Hey Reever, Just put a box on the back of mine that sticks out about the same (40cm). I'm in QLD and rang the transport mob and after being passed from clown to numbscull i finally got someone who seemed to know what they were talking about.

Their advice was that it is fine as long as the blinkers/stop/tail lights can be seen on the 45 degree from a "safe travelling distance". They were unable to say what that distance was as if you were doing 100k's down the freeway it would be a much greater distance than if you were pulled up behind someone at the traffic lights. (so basically, I just stood at the rear of the trailer to one side, took 4 good paces backwards and as long as i could see the lights on the other side of the trailer i was happy).

You must also be able to see the number plate at all angles from the furthest most projection. (therefore, best place for the plate would be on the tool box itself).

I wanted to get the longest box i could on the back so opted for one that already has the sides of the box cut on the 45 degree and this enabled me to have a box anout 1400mm long. If you are just going for the conventional rectangle box, you may need to go a little bit shorter so as you can still see your lights on the 45.

Hope this makes sense and just remember, this is based on QLD advice.

Cheers.

No worries, if you go the full width of the trailer and put the lights, no. plate, reflectors etc on the box you'll be sweet as, nothing to wory about.

The bonus of doing this also, is that you can pack gear into the box to help adjust your ball weight. I tried a few different configurations and with the water tank full and the gear that i wanted packed in the tool box, i got exactly 70KG on my ball. (thasts with gas bottle, spare tyre and battery on the draw bar). Tows like a champion at that weight!

I too was looking on the legalities of carrying fuel on the rear of a van or CT and emailed the RMS in NSW with no joy. Then I thought about it and concluded it would be no different to a ARB rear bar with swing away carriers or some caravans you see with rear Jerry can holders however the law could state these are for non flammable liquids ie water but you never know.

Rear overhang for vehicles (car 4wd etc) and trailers is different.
Car
60% of wheel base to the rear of the axle to a max of 3.7m

Trailer - caravan, camper etc are classed as pig trailers.  Rear overhang can't be more than the load carrying area in front of the axle.  And up to a maximum of 3.7m.  (You would only get up to 3.7m if you trailer was 8+metres.

And the comments about number plates, lights etc apply. For those I would work on 45 degrees left and right and keep them the same distance from the side as original.  There are specific angles, distances etc,  but I don't have them handy

From vic roads, although it is fairly standard across the states.  (Don't try and read too much into it and take it on face value)

i am  spewing i totally forgot about the  two lugs that hold the rear bed up " in older camper pop top trailers " the bed slides out and it sits on two pole's that sit into the two lugs  i could possibly shorten posts and add lugs to rear of tool box  but that more work than i expected for a gain or 33 cm  damn it

Could always use a couple of adjustable tent poles [ $30 pr  or less ] as bed support legs that one section is  bent to clear the tool box and locate on the rear chassis .. Take it the kids use the rear bed so weight wouldnt be an issue .. some rear bed supports just slide into a couple of peices of angle iron welded / bolted under the rear chassis X member to locate into ..

That's the main reason i went for the shorter tool box. Mine fits in between the lugs (measured it on the weekend, it's 1200mm not 1400mm like i mentioned above) so i didn't have to worry about the bed supports. Perhaps you could sacrafice a bit of box length to avoid the hassle of moving the lugs and messing with the support posts?

The other thing to remember if you haven't considered it already, is to get a box with a front opening door so you can still access inside the box when the beds are set up as you won't be able to open a top opening box. (Unless you don't intend to open the box again once you are set up)
