Coober Pedy caravan parks
« on: February 24, 2015, 09:12:27 AM »
Hi all,

Interested in your thoughts on the best caravan park to stay at in Coober Pedy. We are traveling with another family of 6 so underground motels are off the price list

Thanks all

The one closest to the highway is the best and the newest as the other one is right next to the pub and all of the late night issues that come with that - read between the lines

Alternativly if you are just going through an hour or so up the road is Cadney Homestead which has really nice facilities and great burgers from the bar

We stayed at the Stuart Range Big 4 caravan Park.
Don't expect any nice grassy sites there, or anywhere in Coober.

To be honest i was a bit disappointed. I thought that the houses were underground, but that wasn't the case. Only a few in a hill.

We stay at the Big 4.... just cause it fits with our travel schedule as we go up and back along the Hwy.... and pushing that extra hour to Cadney Park just isn't worth it...  Stuart Range C/P  Has the advantage of being able to order a pizza (saves cooking that night). and as it is also on the outskirts and away from the Pub the noise level at night are less....if you get my drift.

Cheers,
Sue

If it still the same as when we were there last June, they do not allocate camp sites, rather, "find any spare site you wish". Problem was when we arrived (4PM and failing light), the park was almost full and with poor park layout maps and poor site marking, we could not find a site!!.  Eventually squeezed in when someone moved tier car for us to make space.
Was better 2 weeks later on return trip as we got there sooner and there park was only half full, but still a bit confusing.
They said they were working on improving this situation but do not know if that was hot air or fact.

As said, rubble underfoot, but the facilities are close and up to scratch

We also stayed at the Stuart Range last year - it came recommended to me by someone that lives up there.

The pizzas were great, but as Bookleaf said, it can be a little confusing on where to set up.  Asked for an unpowered, then ended up in a powered spot.

I Grew up in Coober Pedy and went to school there from grade 2 until grade 8 and there was no grass anywhere then we played footy and cricket on the dirt oval. I went back there 4 years ago and saw the kids playing footy on the grass oval and though bloody kids got it easy now days..

mate there are hundreds of homes underground, and just about all of them are in the sides of hills etc, when I lived there, there weren't many homes above ground. Obviously a lot has changed since 1992 though.

I'll second Riba, plenty of options for above or below ground camping, good/clean amenities. If it is windy and dusty, I'd opt for the underground experience.

We've been through a couple of times and always stay at the Oasis C/P.

Kids love the novelty of the pool inside the tank.
Nothing flash, but cheap enough and safe.

Just hope it doesn't rain..........boy will you know what mud is then :o

Half of the homes are underground. Look for the air vents sticking out of the ground.

A great dugout to visit is Faye's Place. Colin and June are wonderful hosts and spin some great yarns about Faye and life at Coober Pedy.
Cheers,

Tom.
