G'day everyone. I am off to the US next week, is there anything anyone can suggest I can get for the Jayco camper or Pajero that is not available or too expensive in oz?

I am already thinking about GPS and tablets, and I'm not sure if their UHF gear is any good or usable in Australia.

Hey Paul Iam heading to the U.S. On Monday as well only there 3 days but I usually go out to bass pro at Rancho Cuchamonga and also visit the odd offroad shop out that way as well. UHF definetly is the wrong channels for here

With the way the AUD is, and with California's high tax rate, I've found electronics here are pretty much the same price and in some cases cheaper.

Gadgets in camping stores are also expensive. Online prices are rarely duplicated in the stores.

Ross and Marshalls for cheap clothing labels is about it on the last couple of trips for me and the family.

Just about 100% correct. You will not get many/any 'bargains' particularly in California.

Head to Sears to buy spanners & tools that you don't want to even think about buying hear . Forget the power tools as they are 110V not 24oV . Spend up big time on the hand tools & sets of . Then go to the post office with a Birthday card to the cat, dog , gold fish , Farking any body , & send it to yourself . As its a gift from Uncle Whothefarkcares  you might get it past import duty . Great tools to turn your nuts here .  :cup:

Still plenty of bargains to be had even at exchange rate, and Cali's Sales tax is between 8-10% wtf do you think it is here. It's just they trust the yanks to count not like here so put it on top.

I agree with Jim, find the closest Outlet Mall (probably Camarillo) or Macys and go crazy on clothes. That's about the only thing worth bringing back these days.

Some places if you keep your receipts you can get sales tax back at the airport.
It's not well advertised though (found this out in seoul after I'd gone through customs and didn't save receipts. ) not sure if they do it there but check

If you go to Macy's, show your passport and get another 10% off even the sale prices.

When I went there I showed my passport and got a 'Visitors Coupon', it's a barcode they scan that removes the state sales tax.

If 'fashion' clothes are required, the fashion district in Downtown LA is worth a look. Other than that, Downtown LA is a hole. California sales tax is closer to 15% from our experience. You can 'negotiate' sales tax in places like the fashion district and Chinatown. Yes, Sears and similar have some nice good quality tools (spanners etc) at reasonable prices.

We are a family of four and went outlet shopping in 2013 and bought 14 pairs of shoes amongst a heap of other stuff. Had to buy 2 suitcases to bring the stuff home and that was after ditching all the packaging

Was in California 1 1/2 yrs ago and the factory outlets were nearly all as dear as here....maybe we didn't hunt around for the best ones ??

We did end up doing a lot of shopping at Ross for Less stores......mainly clothes and shoes...not a huge range, but CHEAP......a lot of end of line or last yrs stock from somewhere ??

I bought a pair of Adidas response trainers ( size 16 ) for $13....I also needed a pair of golf shoes, but couldn't find a sports store that sold cheap..

We are going to New York side this time ( 4 weeks time ) and I can't find their stores in New York, so will have to wait until we get a bit further down the coast..

Every time I go there I bring back Dewalt cordless tools. They are approximately  a third of what you pay here.  Last year I got 3 x 5a/h 18 v batteries for $99. They are $140 each here

Ross is more a West Coast store (with some random stores elsewhere). In NYC go to Century 21 and Marshall's.

I'll check them out......there are a few Ross stores around, but not actually in New York.

I want somewhere close ( we are staying in Harlem ) that I can buy some warm clothes, mainly a warm jacket, because it WILL be cold...even in 4 weeks time.......saves having to buy it here and also saves room in the bag ( we may leave them behind ...we will be in Miami by then....when we leave as room will be an issue coming home as well )
