Now, I'm not wanting this to turn into a Shite fight, I do have a genuine question.
On the North Coast of NSW earlier this year, we have had 3 floods, and rivers rise again a fortnight ago.
With what is happening in Victoria, it is something none of us what to see anyone go through.
I see on the telly people being interviewed saying they had no warning, from here news reports for the last week were reporting that towns, villages, cities needed to prepare for water levels to rise above records, and quickly, Prepare or leave.
So, Why do I see reports saying people were not warned, vision of people crying saying they had no warning, how devastating this is?
As I mentioned, hope this doesn't turn to Shite.
Being a first responder, I am interested in peoples train of thought.
I've lived through 30 years of floods, now I help those that are effected.
With communication networks, social media, TV, radio and people are ficastated with information, yet they don't act.
Educate me on this, I want to know.
Cheers

Can only assume people aren't paying attention.

Possibly to busy, which many people are in this hectic post covid environment. I know in the lead up to this rain event I hadn't paid attention to a lot of news in the lead up due to "life" being hectic, but I did pay enough attention to know I was highly likely not to be affected in the south east side of the range.

Possibly not paying attention because never thought they would be affected.

Possibly never contemplated they would be affected by flood, so didn't pay any attention. I can imagine the people in Moorrabbin could fall into this category. I am also guilty of assuming what I consider an inner city suburb being affected by a large flood event. Maybe a very localised flash flood when a local storm water drain exceeds capacity, but not an event as extensive as this.

Possibly also a bit of the  media actively seeking these sort of people to make the coverage more dramatic.

For some it maybe a case of it won’t happen to me, others may be referring to the SMS warnings that they felt came too late. Floods, like fires are an ever changing beast and I would think extremely difficult to predict with any degree of certainty.
There certainly would be those who heed the advice and be acutely aware of updates, those who leave preparations to the last minute and those who think she’ll be alright mate.
The time is long overdue for local councils and state government planning authorities to become more accountable when it comes to allowing developments on flood plains etc.
The emotional and financial toll on those effected I cannot imagine and the recovery time for all will be extensive.
Out of these and the previous floods there will be an upside as businesses reap some rewards in sales, renovations, reconstruction and repair works. Household goods, landscaping supplies etc etc,. Downsides in insurance premium rises, if in fact you are able to re-insure, shortages in goods and the almost immeasurable stock and infrastructure losses to the farming communities. No doubt the low life looters will raise their ugly heads but thankfully Aussies as a whole will get behind those effected and help with the recovery effort.

Media will always seek out the most dramatic, panicked person to interview and cut it to look even worse
Over the years when things have turned to custard on site and the media have turned up I've always reminded our team of what people look like on the news
Tell them "We can't stop then giving an interview" but we can remind them that they will be made to look like panicked fools
Unsurprisingly none of my guys have ever agreed to be interviewed  :cup: :cup:

I don't think you can refer to the media as being a creditable source of information. Most intelligent people have become so immune to the media significantly over-dramatizing their so-called reporting that even when it's genuine nobody takes it seriously.

I'd suggest the people referring to "not being warned" are meaning the gov issued text alerts or having an officially recognized disaster response vehicle driving the streets in affected areas warning people locally.

Hi,
River flats (flood plains) make better market gardens, parks and sports fields than bog standard suburbs.
Will we ever learn?

So, They don't believe what the media tell them, I wouldn't trust FB or any other social media, but when I listen to or watch the telly and the message is, we are in for a Shite ton of rain, I start to prepare, make sure I have fuel, for vehicles, generators, Batteries are charged, food, Grog
Anyway, the Clarence Valley is know for floods, as is the rest of the country, but probably not as often.

Text alerts, earlier this year it was a frequent accerance, 3 floods in 3 months. Although, many of those new to the area were caught out.

Hate to say it, But Common sense is a lost skill, :(

I feel the vic emergency app has been somewhat underwhelming.  Since we had the big flood in and around Traralgon a couple of years ago, whenever the predict 10mm of rain they issue a flood warning. It's the old boy who cried wolf syndrome.      In saying that....if I lived in a potentially flood able area. I would be particularly mindful of the current situation.

I think part of the problem there, is that there has been, particularly in these last couple of years, a lot of people moved from the City to the outer suburbs / country areas, & they just aren't aware of the risks ???

Thanks for your replies, it's not a simple answer, but nothing seems to be simple these day.
As we prepare here on the Northern Rivers of NSW for more record rain fall to come, and most of the country is as wet as a Shag, with more to come. :(
