Kids mx bike ... CRF110 Vs KLX110

Ok seeing as His tinny sold .. The little guy now has some capital for his first motorbike.

I have spent more time on this purchase than my dzr400 .

I found all the 50cc bikes to small so the list came down to

Dz70 Suzuki $2290 still a bit small for him 580mm

Crf 110 Honda $2700 good bike good seat height at 667mm no throttle limiter  ??? 3 speed auto

Klx 110 Kawasaki $2390 seat 680mm 4 auto throttle limiter.

So the Kawasaki seems pretty hard to beat in terms of value for money and has the most growing room in it.

Anyone been through this process recently.

please no comments about kids safety etc ..  :D

I started my son on a xr 50 3 speed auto when he was 5 yrs old, it had a throtle limiter but he didn't need it. He then stepped up to a crf80 clutch and 5 speed when he was 9 yrs. He is now 12 and I'm having trouble keeping him off my crf 450.
My daughter in now riding the 50, she needed the limiter.

buy used and save heaps..

Having seen how well these things go at the club at Kilsyth and it should last him quite a while, they race these things...

Honda 4 stroke is hard to beat for reliability, and go fast bits if he does get used to it. These things handle well out of the box too.

Honest, any of the big 4 (yam/hon/suz/kaw) you will find good bikes....

What bout a used TTR110E ? Unsure on price..

Physically go sit him on each one of them and that may help him too..

I'm not a believer in throttle stops, my 3 have learnt to ride our PW50 from a very young age learning to be able roll the throttle on and roll it off, I had it set for my eldest first time she rode it, but only because I thought I should, it limits that roll on roll off feel and I removed it and all was good.
Another vote for the TTR110 here also ! Being an all Yamaha family :) check where the little Kawasaki is built, have a feeling they are Chinese now, or is that the Honda ? One of the main players is now selling Chinese built kids bikes. Not that there is probably anything wrong with a Chinese built motorcycle, the ipad I'm typing on is built there... As is my camper top.

Very true ..but I am a believer in a 75 mr backyard on his first few solo runs to have the throttle stopped  ;D ;D ;D  as soon as he has the handle of the bike its coming off but I have seen far to many first time runs end in a tapped out throttle and a decent crash.

Once he can handle the bike he then needs to learn throttle control as you say..

Our kids all learnt to ride on the CRF50, fitted with training wheels when they were too short to hold the bike up!  The 8yr old  has moved up to the CRF110, awesome feature of electric start!  Oldest (not quite 10y) has been on the CRF80 for the last 6 months, and mastered the clutch within a week or 2.  Bikes have been good for us, and not noisy like a 2 stroke!

The 50 suffered a bent fork after T-boning the 110 at speed, but has been straightened and appears to be working ok!

Hey Jet, I feel half informed to answer this as I currently own a PW50, a TTR50 and a CRF110 for my boys (2 boys aged 7 and 9) - all current models.

They've given you bad info on the Honda, I think that is the specs of the superseded 100, the 110 is definetly a four speed and does have a throttle limiter which is why I turned my back on the Yammy TTR110 because it didn't.

The 110 is a much bigger bike than the 70 (the 70 is about the same as the TTR 50) but if the 70 is already borderline and he can handle the extra weight then I reckon go for the 110 and put the screw in.  Last year I looked at the Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki and the Honda is the pick in my opinion, it's the newest design of the three, has the best plastics in my opinion and the motor is a sweety (it revs to the moon) and is the only one of the three to include roller rockers for what it's worth.

I have just bought a new Yamaha TTR110 for my 6yo boy. He is 144cm tall already, and all the smaller bikes would not last him more than a year.

I am not concerned about the lack of throttle limiter. He needs to learn how to ride... Electric start, reliable = perfect.

I also bought a Yamaha TTR50 for my 4yo boy. He is very green, but is quickly learning to control the throttle.

Both really good bikes, and look good alongside my WR450 in the shed..  ;D

Ok spanner in the works

Kawasaki..deposit paid but no deliver for 3-4 weeks now $2390.00

Honda just came back with $2650.00 in stock and from the same place I bought my bike and he likes red.

So I have goggled and it appears that the kawasaki is more race refined a little taller and has heaps of after-market gear avail.. This is not raelly an issue as its a learner bike ..

But it would appear that the Honda had a better engine comprising of rolla rockers... can someone with engine knowledge comment on this as the only rola rocka I know goes under trailers  ??? ??? ???

Just looking for a engine Vs engine comparion on the 2 bikes that would justify the extra $260.00

everything I own Honda is fantastic, so that is in my mind and the dealer is closer and also my bike dealer

I'd go and tell them you have a deposit on a Kawasaki at X price and if you match it I'll take the Honda while I'm standing here.

You will never go wrong with the Honda engines - or Kawasaki to be honest.

Roller rockers = rocker type leaf springs. (Bushes)
Non roller rockers = slipper type leaf spring.  (No bushes)

I knew all that I just had no idea what it meant in terms of engine design on a motorbike and what value/benefit it is that would make me buy that model that has it in the engine.


Kawasaki now saying 3-4 weeks wait for the bike ..so Honda is looking like a better option every minute.

I know you knew that, that's why I compared them to the springs. (Wasn't explaining what the difference in the springs are  :D )

The roller rocker in the engine has a needle roller bearing, the other is metal to metal contact.
If he's going to keep the rpm up a long time, a roller rocker is a massive advantage. If no high rpm for long periods, it's not required. (In a nut shell)

Told you I know nothing about the inside of motors ..I cant even work out when someone is explaining it to me in terms I know ..LOL ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

So the honda is a sweet little high rever  I think i like the sound of an engine thats at home under high RPM esp in a small kids bike  ;D ;D

Given i want him more into enduro riding than pure MX i think that engine will be better then hey esp after long rides not short sharp laps.

I think both engines will be great. I have never even seen either of those engines, but the green one might not even have a rocker. It could well be a bucket type arrangement which IMHO is even better again ;D

I wouldn't let that be the determining factor.

The green one is cheaper, but with the red one, he would have already popped his first wheel stand and gotten over the first stack before the green one is even delivered ;D
