Swaggers - help needed
« on: January 31, 2015, 08:56:54 AM »
Hi everyone.

Due to Ug being made redundant last week and therefore losing the company car we are now looking for a new car for him.  We are both mechanically illiterate so help is needed.

We don't have a lot to spend, hopefully less than $8K all up.  We have been looking at utes to put tools in but came across this.  What are your thoughts and what should we keep an eye out for?

Thanks

Vicki and Graeme (Ug)

Ask if it has had the head done..
Petrol GQs require headjobs to keep them running.  They crack and some are repaired but once repaired aren't the best things on earth.

Have a look at Holden Jackaroos as an option in that price point. Some may have been used as caravan tugs while others from retirees no longer driving etc

Maybe look at Commodore Utes and Falcadore Utes for now.. you'll get much better options there than you will in a 4wd ute for that price...

then once back on feet a bit more then look to update.

Bit of confusion as the ad says its a ute but the pics and description are of a wagon  ???

Gq's are great  ;D but, as stated, the TB42 petrols lose their heads  :-[  >:(  Also they are VERY thirsty. Better off to find a TD42 (4.2 diesel)  >:D as they are extremely reliable and not bad on fuel, just not a race car  If you look around you can find them for sub $8k.

Hey guys,
I don't know if this would help you, but a d22 navara would do all you would ask of it.
We have had one for quite awhile now and have not had a serious issue with it. Actually its been a really reliable ute.
Ours has just under 300000kms on it now, and it still pulls like a freight train. It has recently just done 10000kms to perth and back and was great.

You can pick them up fairly cheap now, and there are still plenty of aftermarket goodies out to turn them into a tourer or off road weapon.
IMO the ZD30 in the navara is a great motor. Plenty of torque and plenty of go. Particularly as the navara doesn't have either the weight or the turbo setup of a patrol.
They are missing an intercooler, and it does make a massive difference once fitted.

Here are a couple in vic

I was contemplating purchasing a spare ute or 4wd in Vic a month ago as SA prices are ridiculous.

I can tell you, Vic has many (petrol) late 90's Pajeros, mid to late 90's Challengers, mid to late 90s Tritons and late 90's to very early 2000's Commodore utes with medium km's and in good condition at very good prices with vehicle roadworthies included and plenty of rego. You should be able to find something in your price range and still have a few $$$ left over after transfer.

That patrol with those specs will use between 20 and 25 litres per 100km easy around town easy.

There are bargains on gumtree, you just need to know how to search. Foe example,  mate picked up a reasonable condition 80 series dirt cheap due to the owner not getting any hits on his add, why? he spelt landcruiser like this "landcrusier" and didn't show up in searches. My mate happen to miss-spell landcruiser and up she came.

Just looked at Paky car megamart. Let him take a patrol way out of our price for a drive, but one can dream.  It had everything on it.

I think he dribbled all over the steering wheel!!!

If we had the money it would be ours!

Oh well back to the drawing board.

Nah it wasn't quick. I only thought to post on here this morning. We have been looking since last Friday.  Internet every night. Looked last weekend and during the week.

I hate shopping and we had to get one ASAP so he can get a job
