The squeeze is looking at these, so I thought some swaggers might be able to tell us what to watch out for / things to check.

All feedback welcome.

electrics IMO, These newer more electrically complicated 4wds (not just LR either) more commonly cause problems for 2nd and 3rd owners, they are great when everything works but can be nightmarish when things play up, a workmate is going thru this with his disco right now, he has the 3 amigo's lighting up the dash and nothin so far has worked after spending $$$ and countless hours

make sure everything electrical is working and throughly road test it

cheers

2010 TTD Landcruiser, i have added stuff but can't remember what! Slowly gettin quicker at setting up the brumby but breaking camp is another matter....

Yes, electrics seem to be an issue with all new-era vehicles.  I have heard horror stories of some Disco's having major electrical issues from new. Was hoping that a second hand purchase with known service history might avoid this problem.

There is an oil pipe on top of the engine, make sure that has been changed at each service by a compitant LR mech and not serviced at the local garage. The 3 amigoes can be rectified by again going to someone who understands Land Rovers. Check the service book for a quilified LR workshop regular service and all should be good.
There is no problem that cannot be solved by the use of high explosives.

I've just recently got into a D3 - but the TDV6. I didnt really read up on the petrol engine models much at all. But from what I have seem most recommend the V8 over the V6 petrol.

Gearboxes where "sealed for life" from the factory. This isnt correct and the transmission can really do with a fluid change every 60k or so.

Suspension - seems they like to consume suspension bushes - especially on the front lower arms. You can get complete replacement arms cheap enough, but dosent hurt to inspect all the bushes. Make sure all the air suspension is working as it should be, air compressors can fail - they work fairly hard with the main air tank gettting pumped up to 200-240psi.

3 amigoes is an issue with the D2.

If your handy on the home maintenance yourself then I dont think they will be any more of an issue than any other similar aged 4wd.  The great thing is there is also a good market for very good diagnostic units for them (which I'd recommend getting anyway so you can clear fault codes). But if your paying someone to do all the maintenance then I think they will work out a bit more than your average nissoyta as they are a reasonable complex vehicle and not every mechanic knows about them.

Just got a 2010 D4 with the 3.0 TDV6, awesome car but yeah, a few things to watch.
Shane has it right with the front lower arms, and an OBD2 tool will be helpful.

Not that more things go wrong, just that you know about them whereas is other makes, may be a generic fault code or nothing at all.

Service records should be at LR dealers. If you have/get the V8, get shares in BP....
I got a sweater for Xmas, really wanted a moaner or screamer.

For D3 info, I found the forum at disco3.co.uk to be more helpful on the technical side.
