Weber Baby Q issue.
« on: January 11, 2015, 06:42:52 PM »
G'day all, Ive got a Baby Q 1200 and had used it twice prior to going away for 6 weeks in November and hadn't noticed any drama, (purchased in Sep 14).

Prior to going away I replaced my 2 x 4kg bottles and put a 'T' piece onto the bottle with 2 x 900mm (I think) hoses with shut off valves on the end with another POL fitting.  I have it setup like this so I can use 2 appliances of the 1 bottle, it works well, the appliance POL fitting then just screws into the extended one with the shut off valve.

Ok here's the issue.  whilst away I fired up the Weber and found that the flame was continually dancing above the burner tube, imagine the flame being like 30mm above the burner tube, or no flame at all in that area.  It can be just at the end where the gas first enters the burner tube and can actually extend half way around.  I was a bit nervous that the thing would go out and then re-ignite and go bang.

I thought it might have been the new hose and valve possibly being a smaller diameter than the last hose extension.  So I used the Weber regulator directly to the bottle, but had the same issue.

I went into a weber dealer in Maroochydore who were fantastic, told me to ring Weber, which I did and they sent a new regulator, hose and valve assembly to that store.  2 days later I picked it up,  installed it but no joy the flame was still the same.

So, I didn't bother using it and upon returning home I connected the Weber reg directly to my original gas bottle and still the same issue.  Another call to Weber and they have sent me a new burner tube which I received/installed on Friday and the issue still exists.  It continues this erratic flame burning until the BBQ gets hot and then burns OK.

If I turn the BBQ gas control down to halfway when its burning erratically, it burns normal just at a lower flame height?temp

So have any of you had this drama??????????

By the way I have the Family sized Q and have never had an issue for the 2 years we've had it.

This isn't a Weber bashing either, the Company has been fantastic, I just was wondering if I'm the only one this is happening to before they contact me this week.

Thanks

Mick

Have Weber talked to you about "gas equalisation"?

Noticed a similar issue with mine, more so that it wouldn't get hot enought.

Have a read of this http://help.weber.com/faqs/3/my-lp-gas-grill-wont-get-hotter-than-250-to-300

In summary connect bottle, turn on bottle and then wait about 1 minute before opening control on bbq and igniting.

Are you using different gas to before. You might have a different mix.

Sounds like a bit of blockage in the jet, suggest blowing it out using compresser, remove reg before doing so.....blow from both directions.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Supersi, the gas equalisation was one of the first things we tried while away as we googled the issue and that came up.  Once the BBQ heats up after about 7 or 8 minutes it burns normally and then gets to full temp around that 300 in 20 or so minutes.

MDS69, the gas I was using whilst away was different from the original but when I returned home I tried it on the original bottle/gas and it was the same.  I had thought this could have been the issue at first and I actually rang the supplier of my new bottles/gas to see if he'd had any other issues reported to him, none though.

Balheadedgit,  no joy with any blockage either, I had removed the jet on the original assembly and it was clear and I also checked the replacement when it was no better, it was also clear.

Had you washed the inside of the Q prior to the use?  Could there have been water inside of the burner ring?  Once it evaporates the burner works correctly. I had that prob once and got a blow torch onto the outside of the burner to help evaporate/ dry it out so I didn't have to wait ages for it to heat up.

No Supersi, no washing plus I have installed a brand new burner tube that Weber sent me as they said sometimes there can be tiny burrs inside the tube from the hole cutting process that can upset the gas flow.

You guys that have the Baby Q, does it light instantly and the flames stay on top of the burner, not leap off like mine?

Hmmm interesting, def a flow problem, there is a restriction in air flow somewhere, if your getting a flame at the beginning of the burner........ I'll have to look at mine tomorrow, it's going to be an easy fix... But finding the culprit is the hard part...

When I first light it the flame starts at the igniter then travels to the very END of the burner tube first and then travels from the igniter to the start of the burner tube where the gas first enters and this is where the dancing/extinguishing occurs (the knob control end).

Thanks mate......

It's weird because now EVERYTHING involved with the gas has been replaced by Weber from the regulator to the burner tube......

Ok.... Re read your last post, gives me an idea, (

My baby q pops and sounds like low gas when I fire it up on the camper. It's like it will blow out. However if I leave it it is no problem and cooks well. Maybe it improves as heat build.s up.

My weber family q at home does not behave like this at all,

Not sure if that helps?

G'day Hobert, sounds like mine as well the popping is coming from the gas blowing out and re-igniting near the igniter theres a few holes there where the gas comes out and burns.  Yes once mine heats up its fine but I wasn't sure if it should be like it......and like your family Q mine doesn't do it either.

If the flame is blue in colour and is dancing above the burner, it sounds as though it is getting to much oxygen, air/ fuel mix ratio.

Very well could be too, if I partially cover the air inlet covered with gauze on the end of the burner tube it settles down.....

Yep, I've got the BBQ about 500mm off the ground and the bottle on the ground, have tried with the regulator with the hole facing down (as in the Weber manual) and also flat like we normally do.
