BPay Scam, Has anyone seen this one?
« on: December 29, 2014, 06:54:14 PM »
Got an e-mail today from john@mail.taminda.com with a title
"Important Alert for Katherine. BPay Transaction Dispute number 76721"
Goes on to say
'Hello Katherine.
The recent transaction (ID: 559104968), recently initiated from your bank account, was cancelled by the Electronic Payments Association.
Canceled transaction
Transfer Case ID   341647
Amount   2504.16 Australian dollar
Sender contact  (was our private e-mail address)
Rejection Reason   See attached word document
Please check the word document attached below to view more details about this issue. '

So I've deleted it because pretty sure that BPay don't communicate with people like this and they would know how to spell the word cancelled.
Opening the word doc would most certainly be a trojan

Anyway, hadn't heard of this one before so thought I'd let you know

So simple people.
I have email rules in place, if I receive an email from anyone not in my address book, it gets deleted automatically.
So I never see them.
If it is genuine they can call me, or knock on my door.

Are you on the do not call list and have a do not know sticker on the door too?

TBH I'd rather have the emails I can easily delete, than the random phone calls and door knockers.

Yes, but make that a 'Do not knock sticker' and a silent phone number as well.

Having a silent number does not stop the telemarketers as they use a computer to randomly dial numbers in your area but renewing your "do not call" registration every two years is effective.

And if you still get calls, politely ask the name of the company they are calling on behalf of and write down all the details, read it back to the caller to confirm them, then tell them you're going to report them for calling, then email the company in question and tell them.  >:(
So far I've done this 3 times with different companies, each time I got an email back apologizing and never got another call about that company. I think most companies use the same call centres and once they get a complaint from a client your number gets blacklisted on their systems  :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup: :cup:

I get calls about Electricity & Telco's about switching providers.

With the electricity I ask them what their In-feed Tariff rate is as I'm a net producer of electricity (I wish) they usually hang up quickly after that.

As for telecoms companies I just make up some lowball prices on the line & call rates, or ask if they have fixed the problem that I reported.

Surprisingly a lot of them are quite rude and just hang up.

As for emails - if you are offering me money or telling me to claim something and I don't know you then it get deleted.
As do all notices from PayPay, eBay, Western Union, Spanish Lottery etc...

One thing to be wary of is when your settings don't display the file type so that an attachment like  kittens.jpg.exe is displayed as kittens.jpg and looks way more innocent.

OT but, had a charity ring me multiple times, one call after another.  Politely asked that they don't ring back and take me off their call list.  Received more calls the next day, on the second call I abused the caller, used extremely foul language and haven't heard back from them since.  Sometimes it pays to be rude rather than polite!
