Suggest an Itinerary?
« on: December 02, 2014, 08:14:12 PM »
My wife and I are planning to take a month off in April and head off to the red centre from Sydney, returning across the Simpson from the west. We have a 200 series which is well equipped, an off road camper trailer and reasonable experience everywhere except the desert. We may have another vehicle or two with us.

We plan to take our time and enjoy the trip without busting a gut. Can anyone suggest an itinerary?

Many thanks.
Keith

200 Series 2008, bull bar, Airmax snorkel, rack with 200 watt solar, third battery, winch, 33's with 2 spares, long range tank, drawers & barrier, bash plates, lifted & locked, Richards transmission lockup plus plenty of dings. Now towing the new Off Road Glamper.

We drove across via the Plenty and back across the Simpson (solo and towing our camper) plus fitted in the myswag trip (see link) in four weeks.

From Sydney head sort of West , turning South or North  depending on when you are  pop out in the NT to go to Alice .
Travel to  " The Rock " look around , spend $$ , depart   .   Return via your chosen route.

Hard question to answer Keith, because there's so much to see.

One thought is Sydney, Tibooburra, Innamincka (Dig Tree, Wills & Burke), Strzelecki Track to Maree, Oodnadatta Track with a side trip to The Painted Desert & Lake Eyre, The Rock, Boggy Hole, Hermansburg, Palm Valley, Alice, Old Ghan Railway to Finke, Mt Dare, Dalhousie Spings, Birdsville, Quilpie, home.

Or

Sydney, Broken Hill, Flinders Ranges, Road Kill Café Parachilna (aka The Road Kill Café),Arkaroola, Farina, Marree, Oodnadatta Track,   Alice Springs, Glen Helen, Larapinta Loop to Kings Canyon and Kings Creek Resort, The Rock, Lamberts Geographical Centre of Australia, Mt Dare, Dalhousie, across the Simpson and home as above.

A month doesn't seem anywhere near long enough.   :'( Drop out whatever you need to make it fit but don't rush.

Keep an eye on the weather and the SA Roads conditions as it is often wet at that time of year and the Oodnadatta and Strzelecki tracks often have closures or restrictions.  http://dpti.sa.gov.au/OutbackRoads

This is ours from Sydney. The last few days are missing but you should get the idea. We came back through Broken Hill and went to Silveton etc.

Gday Keith
I won't get to far into an itinerary but I can repeat some of what the others have said.

Oodnadatta Track, Uluru, Olgas, Kings Canyon, Palm Valley, Everything on Mereeni Loop, (Alice to Finke..Chambers Pillar, Lamberts Centre, ....or  Binns Track to Old Andado Station...its a must see IMHO), Mt Dare....choose your route wisely crossing the Simpson.

Im not sure how much the Simpson changes from start to end of season but we crossed it at the end of the season, west to east on the French/QAA Line and it was very rough on the entry to the dunes. We were definitely making comment that we are glad we didn't have a camper in tow.

Do a bit of a loop

From Sydney head south west and check out Wilpena Pound and Arkaroola
Then make your way north up the Oodnadatta take a detour and check out Coober Pedy
The go to Alice and stock up and have a look around
Then Maybe do the Meranee loop taking in Kings Canyon
Off to the rock and the Olgas
Then across the Simmo to home
