Somewhere else like mungo brush?

Planned to head off for a quick weekend to Mungo Brush this weekend, now we've found out it's closed due to bush fires.

Any other suggestions within about an hour of Newcastle that would include some swimming, kayaking suitable for a few families with camper trailers? Looked at munmorah, but haven't been there personally.

I used to live in port stephens,  might not be what your looking for but great beaches and you can drive burubi beach

Clarence Town is a good spot. Plenty of room at the caravan park and the river swimming is ok at the boat ramp.

Nat parks might be a bit slow, but a few showers 2 nights ago with a few more forecast for tonight and tomorrow, so I'd be surprised they would be closed by the weekend, but as said, they might be slow to react if the showers do happen.

Myall River Camp......better and cheaper than Mungo.

Clarencetown......been there 14 times in 10 yrs, so at least I think it's OK !!

Didn't like the cranky old woman caretaker and the place seems a little exposed to southerlies, but apart from that it looks nice up there.

I would pick Glenbawn over it though, but with either you may have to break the speed limit to do it in around an hour from Newie !!

Sandbar Caravan Park is about 1 hour 45 mins north of Newcastle and is on Smith Lakes which is good for swimming, fishing and kayaking. The surf is a short walk away alongside the lake. Powered sites are $30 per night. I have been there a number of times with my kayaks without ringing in advance and found it easy to get a good site. Forster is about 30k north of the caravan park. Ended up going to Shoal Bay CP. Not bad, as far as being shoehorned into a patch of dirt a long walk from the amenities. strangely there was a row of ensuite cabins between the camping area and the amenities! Campers are the forgotten tribe in caravan parks it seems.

Plenty of smoke to be seen coming from the mungo area so glad we made the change.

We headed for a secret spot around Coolongolook but instead settled at Bretti reserve...

Yeh, plenty of smoke coming out of Mungo area..

If you are looking for a more camper style of van park, then Island Leisure Village is one I haven't stayed at but friends have and were pretty happy with it..
