Gday everyone
Just bought a ports potti to encourage the missus to go other places than caravan parkes & I've got some questions on using it ( beside the obvious).
1: do you need to use the toilet paper that is made by porta potti & claimed to dissolve easily?
2: read on here that nappysan can be used in the holding tank. How much is needed & what version of nappysan?
3: if it needs emptying in the bush, is it OK to dig a hole (away from rivers, etc) & empty into it?

Biggest tip I can give, jobs not finished till the paperworks done.

Marine date paper is pretty good, but we just use normal stuff in ours.

If ya in the bush, I reckon yeah, but common sense will rule and based on ya questions anyway, I reckon ya got a handle on it all.

The blue stuff/crappynappysan will often have a advice thing on the amount.

We use the blue marine stuff when camping and in the boat.

Helps a lot to break down torpedos to bullets, in my opinion.

There are chemicals you can use but they are a tad expensive. In the top tank (flusher) we use a mixture of a couple of squirts of Palmolive dishwasher detergent as it is a good lune for the seals and about 200-250mls (1cup) of disenfectant because it smells pretty when you flush with the recommended amount of water for your flusher.

In the bottom tank we use home brand napisan. We usually buy a big container of it and use about half the container over a 4 day trip.  Basically, if it starts to smell, put in more napisan.  I think the environmental toilet paper breaks down better than the normal stuff but it all turns into paper machete.  We usually dig a hole and empty the contents in and refill.

Did you get a 10 pr a 20lt toilet?

Oh, and if ya camping on Fraser and looking at around 12 empty beer bottles on the table and then ya notice the above mentioned porta potti is full, try not to be laughing and giggling like a school girl when ya pouring 10 litres of crap down a hole.

As good as you might think you are, your aim will be average to say the least and a certain amount of MATTER may miss the said hole.

You may not notice spots on ya shirt at first, but the flies will.

1. I use the special paper, I find it breaks down a lot quicker.
2. I just use the blue stuff. For the amount that you use in a year, the cost isn't worth worrying about IMHO
3. We always try to empty into a dump point where possible. But yeah, common sense I reckon.

I also use the pink stuff that goes into the top tank, I find it helps with the smell and lessens the ....umm...... skids!

Emptying is not a pleasant job at the best of times. And watch the 'splash back' if emptying into a hole in the ground!

OK. We used a 10lt job for a while but then upgraded to a 20 lt as on one 4 day trip the 10lt got full on the evening of the third day.  Is it just for the mrs or are there kids as well?

As others have said, if you don't plan to camp very often then the chemicals are affordable. We camp quite a bit since we got the CT (supposed to be camping this weekend but the Mrs is crook) and I reckon using Tthe nappysan works just as good.  Try it with the proper chemicals until you run out then try the alternative, that way you can make up your own mind.

We are in the same boat. I never use the potti for #1s just 2s, Mrs uses it for both. Keep an eye on the levels for your 12 litre, it can get fuller quicker than you think.  Muz

The missus only uses it for no.1's ( I have a hospital bottle ).

If we are in the bush where there are no toilets, it's a hole dig for both of us....if you're gonna tip the contents of a dunny in a hole, you may as well save the trouble and use the hole in the 1st place !!    If the wife is not keen on a hole, take a pop up shower tent and one of those seat things ( with a dunny looking seat on it ).

As for no.1's, it gets tipped out anywhere ( usually behind the van )

Don't worry, it took a while for the missus to get retrained for bush crapping, so even if your missus baulks at the idea, after she likes the bush camping idea, she'll eventually take to the bush crapping idea.

We go bush camping at Easter on the Murray waterskiing, have done in the same place for 40years, for the last 20 or 30 ( cant remember) we have been using two porta pottis. We use the genuine chemicals and normal toilet paper.Because the ground is so hard above the high water mark have been using the same holes year after year and the next year there is never any sign of toilet paper or anything else in the holes in fact the way we identify the holes is by the slight depression and lush green grass so I dont think its doing much harm. The porta pottis are used for number 1 & 2's and we can have as many as 20 women there, a lot being 18 to 25 so they get a lot of use, our record for the two dunnies  is three empties in one day. You got to drink a lot of beer to dig that many holes.

Let me tell you the worst are the locals up there when they go skiing up the river there is bloody toilet paper left behind every tree 

So in answer to your question normal toilet paper used with decent chemical will break down completely within twelve months

We bought a 10L one for ningaloo & have only used it there. We used normal loo
Paper & the enviro friendly sachet things in the bottom tank. We also used some Milton baby bottle cleaner stuff (you can get liquid or tablets) in the top tank to sanitise the bowl when flushing.

We mainly used it for number 2's, if no one was around we just did number 1's on the sand behind the car.

The owners at ningaloo advised us to dig a hole to empty it out away from the camping area which we did. Not a fun job.

If they are leaving footprints in the bowl....... Your doing it wrong!

Normal loo paper works fine. If not sure, throw a few sheets into half a jar of water and give it a quick shake. It should disintegrate pretty quickly.

We use the green coloured enviro natural stuff for top and bottom tanks and find that it breaks down the marine toilet paper and solids very quickly. The trick is to give the toilet a bit of a gentle swirl / shake just before going to bed as this really activates the green stuff to do its job.

There is a lady nicknamed Dr Poo (who has several uni degrees and other qualifications) who sells the stuff at the camping shows. She contracts to National Parks fixing the toilets that people have emptied their loos in, when using the chemicals, which kills all the bacteria in the pit or composting toilet thus making the toilets systems stop working. If you get the chance, have a chat to her as she really knows all about the subject.

So if using the smelly chemicals, only empty it in an approved dump point or if desperate, dig a very deep hole away from creeks and trees. Don't be surprised if you wont be able to buy the chemicals in the future as more and more places are banning there use. Ignoring these bans will only lead to facilities / areas being closed and locked up, which no one wants to see.
