Bushfire Season 2014/15
« on: November 10, 2014, 04:31:33 PM »
Mate has just had his first bushfire scare for the season - 12 Hectare fire in Cemetery Lane Eldorado which had 26 trucks and 2 choppers. He is on the south side and the fire was on the north side moving away. May have started on a neighbours property but he thinks it is nearly under control.

Nothing serious locally, but we've already sent a strike team to a 1600 hectare grass fire north of Adelaide that resulted in the death of a fire fighter, and had 4 or 5 tfb so far. Not a good start to the season.

Local 6pm news has just said they are asking Eldy residents to evacuate but I think the CFA site would be more accurate.

Perhaps a smoke precaution I didn't see anything about that on the cfa page they did say there would be smoke around still.

Mate had a fire up to his boundary fence last Friday. Apparently it started from a pile that was burnt 3 weeks ago...

Climate change is not crap and global warming will result in more extreme weather events. Must admit I am feeling the extra heat in Canberra already. Temps are at Summer levels not Spring.

Small grass fire , in long green grass . lt was spooky watching smoke coming out of green grass but the dry load from last year was well away . 6 trucks & 2 ultra lights rounded it up quickly , only about 10 Ha .With the wind we had yesterday & given how dry its getting in 3 weeks that could have been a huge runner . Be careful out there

The boys were pretty busy with the choppers filling up at Glenbrook Lagoon, the sky crane was running back and forth from the Rowing Regatta (or somewhere down near there).

Just went round the corner 1/2 hour ago and you can see the smoke rising and then just hanging there, no breeze at all. There's a lot of fires happening agin though after last year i don't think they will take any chances or let anything get by them. The local macca's is usually an RFS parking lot this time of year. Cheers to your son (and the rest) for his efforts.

Great photos Broady. Proud to say that last one with the RFS on it belongs to a mate of mine . One of three he has and has leased it to the RFS every season pretty much since inception. Kawasaki made MBB117,  great bird plenty of lift capacity.

Yep the firies in the mountains are pretty extraordinary guys and thanks to your son OM. The time and dedication they put in is very much appreciated here, as are the extra crews who come in to help from time to time.

rubbish.

anyway keep the thread to fire related.

Damn I missed your new role as forum administrator.

Terry makes a very valid point given that we are discussing fire and a hotter drier climate may add to that danger.

Bring back the controlled burn off or for the more politically correct, hazard reduction or hazard mitigation burns to help reduce the hot bushfires that have been seasonally happening since burn offs were stopped.
