Trailer build ideas

Hi

I'm looking to build a new camper....


Vague plan is for a trailer, build to be the same wheeltrack as the patrol. Running 285/75R16 (33").

Trailer needs to be multi purpose.

1. General use box trailer. Use for carting crap to the tip, fetching wood etc.. So needs to have a traditional "box" component.

2. Camping trailer to carry roof top tent.  Basic plan is to have the RTT mounted about 1m above the bed of the trailer, with the intermediate space being build around storage (spacecases or whatever).




One consideration was to have a chassis, and then have different bolt on modules for either box trailer or camper use.

 - how would i fix it on? bearing in mind that it's all liable to be deep in mud at least some of the time, i don't fancy removing rusted bolts..


Or,an enclosed camper module which fixes into the base of the trailer - again how do we fix?

Or, a camper module which extends the box - dust/waterproofing then becomes the issue...

What about the same way they do the tray top campers?
You could have a box that houses your kitchen and camping gear, water tank, batteries etc etc with the roof top tent above.
If you use a few otc latches it would be solid as a rock and then all you need to do is jack it off and you have your box trailer back again?

Funnily enough, i'd just been thinking about something like that.

Except....

Water tank, batteries etc. all living (fixed to bottom of the box top) in the box of the trailer. then a box top with drawers/hatches etc. then the RTT mounted onto the roof of that.

The kitchen could be rear door mounted (like a traditional soft floor), but have 2 different tailgates - hinged differently..

Fridge on a slide (again fixed the the bottom side of the box)

Starting to build new frame bit lower this time.
Hoping to have front top and side enclosed on new one eventually unsure bout back as I mainly want to store a 4 wheeler in it.
Plan is to set up a battery in box at front, then where the Gerry can holder is now add a electrical box.
Gerry can on other side away from cooking flames, gas bottle holder on left hand side behind wheel.
Spare wheel to be located on a new side swinging tail gate, replacing drop down current one.
Still deciding between second gas bottle or second Gerry can holder.

Mine will be able to be unbolted to remove tent and awning, but really doubt it will get removed very often due to lack of space at new house I'm building, plus weight of it.
Can t really afford 4x jacks to set up on each corner for easy removal.

The main thing is to make it as simple as possible to change between the two. I would get a 7x4 heavy duty trailer built with front box, water tank, jerry holders etc. Get it made with 4x vertical box sections in each corner, that is where the rooftop tent frame will sit. Then just store the camping gear in boxes as required.

I did some research into doing this a while ago. The main thing I found was that if it was too difficult to change between camper/utility trailer then it would reduce how often you went camping or used the trailer. If you wanted to go for a last minute weekend trip and there was no-one to help install the tent and frame it would end up in the too hard basket and you wouldn't go. Also worked the other way when you needed to pick up a fridge and you had to unload the camping stuff and tent/frame it would become a hassle.

Hey Jon, heaps of ideas on that US camper trailer site, they love those type of trailers, I forget the name of it though.
