What to use?

Hi Everyone,
I have some silly questions for you all. We are selling and want to live on the road. Suggestions for a provider of mobile/internet/sat phone. What about medical? Does anyone use E-doctor? We have pretty much everything, I welcome all opinions and suggestions.

 Yep, Telstra.   Get a blue tick phone where an external antenna can be connected, then get an external antenna, patch leads etc.  Telstra mobile broadband device for your internet and again parch lead to connect to your antenna.   If the broadband will not pick up a signal your phone may so you can use that as your modern for your laptop or ipad.  Some use an antenna fitted to the vehicle, others use one that has a magnetic base that you can then move where you like to get the best signal.  But remember a lot of outback Australia you will get no service, sometimes the trick is to get near an aboriginal community as they can have good coverage.  There are different opinions re a sat phone.  We don’t carry one and have been in remote areas a lot, but we probably have just been put off by the cost.  But they are defiantly the best way to go in an emergency.  Do a search re phone and mobile coverage there have been some very good threads.  Kevin

Just make sure with a mobile phone for the bush that its a blue tick phone

yea, the same and as I live in a remote we really have no choice. Telstra are putting new towers up all the time and I can now get from Broome to Kununarra with signal all the way but you must have an external areal. Not sure I would worry about separating your phone and modem though when you can just use your phone but depends on what you want to achieve.

I have a Telstra Elite modem that is mounted permanently in the car and connected to and external antenna on the bull bar and always on. The Modem also acts to provide movies to the kids via the 2 X 2 terabyte Hard Drives connected and wireless access. I have added a signal light so the boys know when they have internet so they get on Face-Book etc and stay in touch with mates. Yea they could look out the window but when you do this 5 times a year the I-Spy gets pretty boring. it's cool the boys can also get to a hotel if we are staying and simply head inside and the movie channel (Paj-Movies) still plays ;D

Thank-you one and all for passing on your wisdom, I would rather hear this info from those using the carriers rather then a sales person in some outlet shop who have never being out of town.

That sounds to be a great setup :cup:

Make sure you get the phone from Telstra as theirs has Next G capability. I know a lot of rural areas have only Next G eg (Torres Straits) many people who have travelled up there (myself included) have tried to use an unlocked phone from another carrier but fitted with a Telstra is card and found that it won't connect.

Also consider a phone that supports the new 700Mhz (LTE Band 28) as this will provide better coverage than the existing bands due to the lower frequency. Telstra and Optus will start switching on this frequency from Jan 2015 but there are already area's active for trial purpose's.
Only a few handsets currently support 700MHz (B28) such as the iPhone 6 and Samsung S5.

Note: the US 700Mhz band is different so phones and tablets such as the iPad 3 that support the US 700MHz band won't work on LTE Band 28 in Oz.

Hey Speewa158,
Now the plan is an interesting one. It started 6 years ago from Brisbane, had to make a detour to Cairns, one of our kids needed some help with her family, all surrounding health issues. Now that she is back on her feet and well again it's back to the drawing board. Back to Brissie and revaluate our options. We are talking about a 10 year plan, tossing in the air weather to also buy a coaster bus to live in when we are not going around the block. Also tossing up if we should travel around this country first, have a peep at the place and then with a coaster, go back to the places we would like to stay at for a while, maybe pick up work as we go around in the coaster. Geoff (hubby) built our trailer and I am always insisting that it's his resume, we intend to travel in this one for now. Lots of tossing here at present! Loving the forum, filled with so much knowledge!
