Snake proofing yards

Your yard looks great! Being on acreage, we too are concerned with the safety of our pets. The cats live in a 8.0x2.4 enclosure under the rear veranda enclosed with 1" mesh to full height then the snake mesh to 600mm high. So far so good.

The pup stays inside or outside only with us, and she just loves the shed! On occasions she also goes into the cat enclosure and we feel safe with that.

I have heard that the bird netting works well, and in fact at our old place we caught a snake in a trap set by the Snake Catcher that was made of such material. Once a snake gets tangled in there it is pretty well stuck.

What do you mean by not being "legal" in bunching up along your fence line?

Also, as pointed out earlier, those electronic snake deterrents are a complete waste of money in my experience!

You could get a solar powered snake repeller or five from Pestrol.

Site quote : "The snake repeller will vibrate within the ground sending off warning sounds to snakes 30m in circumference".

I thought snakes were deaf, and I also hope they mean the repeller works in a 30m circumference area, not that it works on snakes 30m circumference. That would be one Godzilla sized snake.

We had a Jack Russell a few years ago who went head to head with a red gutted black. They both lost, the snake in the fight, then the dog four days and $3 500 in vet bills later. If these worked you could get a bunch of repellers for a small part of a vet or dog replacement bill.
No affiliation and don't have a clue whether they work. We did have a mouse repeller from them that plugged into a power point, and that never worked.

Not sure if I already put this in posts above but we have the solar snake repellers and had them in the yard when we lost our last dog we had a snake within 6 meters of one that was working late last year so my bet would be that no they don't work so I would hate for people to rely solely on these as a protectant for their animals.  Very sorry to hear of the loss of your Jacky they wont back down from much, when we lost our first dog Dash there was 2 dead browns in the back yard.

Yes, you did put your experience with solar repellers in your thread, but I failed to read it. My bad.
Pity they don't work, but with my experience with the Pestrol mouse deterrant having the same result I certainly don't doubt your statement.

LOL it's all good I could not remember where I have put info about them now as I have had posts on my facebook about similar issues. The yard does seem to be doing the job and I work part time so the days that I am home the dogs are with me.

Thanks they were a bit of work to get them done with the mesh zip ties and making the pegs and cutting around the corners then covering those over and was hot days when I did them so out in the morning and the arvo was quite proud of them

Yes they have popped up on my facebook a few times those videos we have tried to minimise the water in the yard and keep the yard area tidy I have not seen any recently but that doesn't mean they are not around I always keep my eyes open when outside especially feeding the horses.

Not long after my first post on this thread, this little fella slithered into the garage.. We live on over 5acres of cleared land, dam and creek down the back, but he chose to come right up to the house for reasons unknown. Really opened my eyes what dangers are around - but it was a good way to educate the kids and show them a real snake.

Did you tell the kids that under no circumstances to touch the snake (particularly the head end) even though it's headless?  We have experienced them 'snapping' around and wanting to have a go even after they have been split into several pieces....
I think the old bush saying is that you don't touch the snake until after the sun goes down (or similar) however if you dispatch one I wouldn't be anywhere close by until the next day....... bearing in mind that snakes also move at night I'll keep my distance until I really know that it has gone to snake country in the sky.....
Good aim with the shovel though....!!!

Never seen one, but I'm sure they are up here.

However, we are also loaded with Kookaburra's, so maybe that's what keeps them at bay?

Yes mate! I kept them away, but talked through what to do if they see one. I bagged it straight after the photos and deposited it in the bin. Have removed the image as apparently it's not legal to protect your kids from dangerous animals in Australia. Anyway, it died of natural causes and I just happened to find it.

At a mates place out Urana a couple of months back. His yard is 90% dirt with just a couple of clumps of ankle height weed...wrong type you pot-heads.
Lost track of how many browns we seen casually crossing from one side of the yard to the other on their way to wherever...though to be fair, the amount of beverage consumed over the time MAY have caused us to see double at times     Have also seen many types sunbaking out in the open over the yrs.
So while it's a good idea to keep food etc to near nonexistence, you'll never truely be able to 'snake-proof'

Seen this fella on the weekend, was taking a possum.
We get plenty of carpet snakes and whip snakes and have a couple of Blacks that hang around. Thankfully no Browns! Touch wood.
Never been a problem with our cattle dog yet. Just part of where we live, you just learn to watch where you walk and where you put your hands!

I live in an area full of snakes, black and mostly brown
Been trying everything for years, lost plenty of pets and almost a kid

Bird netting works,but has to be the non woven type, often they come in for water, can put some around troughs and drinkers and they get caught. Watch out as often they re still alive and need some massage with shovel. Also bit hard to get them out of the netting.
There is a push to restrict it as it is too effective.

Guinea fowl dont do much, my parents have 20x and snake repellers and neither stop them turning up.

Best we have found is sacrificial cats, snakes really dont like them. Still live with us but free shed cats work pretty well. Keep them fed and they dont bother wildlife much

Other story i have is for a fact black snakes eat browns, pulled a 1m brown snake from inside 1.1m black few weeks ago. Bluetongues are helpful too Im told.
