Mansfield to Walhalla
« on: October 16, 2014, 01:38:53 PM »
Can anyone give me an idea of how long this trip would take via Woods Point? I need to get to Walhalla from Wodonga and am contemplating either heading down the Hume or turning off and heading straight down from Mansfield.  From home it states around a 7 hour drive but is a bit quicker heading down the highway. We do not mind taking the scenic route if time permits.

Cheers

Mansfield to Woods Point used to take me two hours at a quickish pace when I worked up that way. Allow another two to get down to Walhalla safely, the road is pretty narrow and windy in places, and you do want to have a bit of a look around on the way!

Last time I went through there you wouldn't want a camper trailer behind you between the Aberlfedy river and Walhalla, very narrow and windy with almost no passing areas.  ???

Knockwood to Stratford via Walhalla was 4hrs 30min. I'd say it would be quicker doing the Mansfield - Walhalla section. North of Aberfeldy was crap as Keith says...slow going with potholes etc, but I think it got repaired just before winter..maybe cactus again - very narrow in sections.

Thanks for the update everyone. We will not be towing for this trip due to the terrain we are going through and the possible extremity of some of the tracks along the way. Our intention is to eventually get to Dargo sometime Tuesday all going well.

Glad to hear the Mansfield Woods Point road is in good nick Rich. We could either take the Walhalla road or the other route from Woods Point. Will discuss with some locals when we  get there.

Cheers

Tight??

My uncle used to cart logs out of there with a 1418 'Benz and single axle jinker, and my Dad carted pulp on billets with an old Albion and single axle pig trailer. Very very slowly, with very careful positioning of the logs on the jinker so they didn't dig into the bank at the back or hit the cab at the front.

But it was a long time ago. Early '70s. With stories of driving the truck from the running board because it was to hot in the cab whilst climbing the hill from Thomson River bridge.

Ahhhh. The good ol' days.
