Cub on the Gunbarrel

Found this on the Gunbarrel Highway last week.
Looked like the main suspension cross member tore out due to the horrendous corrugations and was abandoned.
Didn't look to have been there for very long, anyone got any info? Sure had been ratted of anything worth taking

Your insurance would take care of that. I'm sure if it wasn't insured they would have done something to get it back.

Would it? What would they claim?
I can't see an insurance company paying out just because it broke and they left it behind.

l wonder which suspension it had . Either way it wouldn't have lasted long . You don't see a lot of people out there but work like that dosent take long . lf the Gunbarrel is a track & not a road your stuffed as far as insurance . Read the policy again . Check out the classified for another when you get back to town . No point going back to get anything  >:D

When I did the Gunbarrel in 2005 I was surprised by the number of trailers & roof racks along the way. If I'd had the room I could have salvaged some good items! (Or is that stealing???)

Here's a pic of where the cross member tore out.
I guess you could say to the insurance company that you hit something to cause the damage. And then the salvage to get it out of the desert alone would write it off. So it stays there.
I could be wrong but I'm guessing the Gunbarrel Highway is still a gazetted road?

Why on earth does someone need to tear the rest of the camper up?  Damaging an axle is one thing, but the wanton(?) vandalism of the rest of it is bloody criminal. >:(

I wonder if it was some crappy welds that failed, it could have also been overloaded with limited suspension travel.

Whatever the cause was I'm sure it will create more discussion on independent suspensions not being as good as leaf springs. FWIW I've seen leaf hangers fail in a similar spot too.

That would have been pretty distressing for the owners.  It's also a bit of a worry for me as I've just bought a Spacevan with the independent suspension that I thought would be up to such conditions.  I'm struggling to understand how the cross member could be ripped out through normal use (although on Cubs it does sit lower than most others), no matter how bad the corrugations are.  I could understand a breakage of the coils, swing arm, or stub axle, or failure of the shocks but ripping out the cross member would require significant and perhaps direct impact.  Perhaps there were problems with welds on this Cub.

I can't believe someone abandoned their CT. Sadly, there appears to be more and more scumbag vandals around and apparently they are not just found up my way.

Unfortunately up here (Cairns area) I have seen many cars vandalised.  These have been mainly due to cars that have broken down beside a major road. Usually within 24 hours they have had their windscreen smashed and their number plates removed.

If the vehicle has been left there for a few days, then the vehicle has been properly trashed.  All of the windows smashed, tyres slashed, panels dented etc.  I am guessing it is a younger generation doing this as it wasn't that common 10 years or more ago. I see a new car every week up here.

Not that i condone it, but i do understand why people steal parts from broken down or abandoned cars or CT's; I don't understand why anyone would vandalise and destroy someone else's possession such as a car or CT.  It must be heartbreaking for the owners.   I think these vandals are grubs that don't contribute anything good to society.

Maybe it was stolen so they didn't mind leaving it behind? Wonder if the VIN matches something on a register somewhere?

I think a lot of these issues come down to tyre selection and pressure from an equipment perspective and then speed of travel.

Maybe it was the best thing that happened. They went back to get spare parts and when they returned it was trashed.

So they could claim this on insurance?

Unless the owner comes on and tells us I guess we will never really know what happened.

When I was on the Gunbarrel  a few years ago the corrugations were pretty bad (and they won't have got any better) but it was the washouts that really required care. And they won't be any better either.

I wonder if this was  not caused  caused by hitting a hole in the road really hard.

On my trip in a convoy I was following a cub camper a lot of the time and got a pretty good look at its suspension in action. I have to say I came away impressed by how it handled the lumps and bumps.

too many variables at play here.....overloading? pressures? speed? many issues would be avoided if you slow down

cars and trailers being raided is nothin new.....i remember as a kid in 84 heading north out of coober pedy when the stuart was still dirt a bunch of black fellas parting a abandoned falcon, they waved to us as we passed, no attempt to hide what they were doing!

i prolly wouldnt take one of those down the gunbarrel tho, maybe my brumby being light on a full caravan chassis would b ok

ps most insurance companies will cover you where ever you are as long as you are legally allowed to be there, heard this from numerous companies when gettin quotes

I think you need to check who is insuring you. I'll ask my broker tomorrow (first thing you should have before any insurance!).

I did ask him about the patrol and I was told my policy was for on and off-road. But I will be specific about Tk and beach etc.

Just a question in insurance for Patrol and Camper Trailer.

If I'm out on an unofficial track in the desert/ high country and I have to abandon both or either and I insured?

If I'm doing a water crossing and get washed down stream are the two insured?

If I'm driving on a beach and get bogged and the tide comes in, am I insured?

I ask these questions in regard to the pic below, which was in the desert out the back of nowhere.

Pretty night and day I would think......are you legally allowed there? So upto you to do your homework regarding where you go, I was told if I roll on telecom hill I am covered but if I drive thru a flooded crossing with road closed signs I am not
