Major pipeline construction somewhere?
« on: October 06, 2014, 08:21:19 AM »
Hi all

Hoping someone here will know the answer to this.  On the way back from the vic meet up, I saw a number of trucks carrying what looked like very large pipeline sections.  They looked to be about 20ft diameter and about 50 ft long.  I didn't think much of it until this weekend when we saw a number of these trucks on the Western Hwy heading towards Melbourne.  They are absolutely huge sections of pipe and look like they are made of stainless steel.

Does anyone know what these pipeline sections are for?  Are they pipeline's or something else?

I didn't get a photo of them unfortunately but they were so many of them, someone else must have seen them.

cheers

Darcy

If they are the same that I saw, they are pedestal sections for wind turbines.

yep the one's I saw were tapered slightly so I assumed wind turbine pedestals also.  Last time I flew over Canberra, the wind turbine farm East of Lake George appeared to have several additional ground work prep being done for new extra units. Could be heading there?

ahhh...didn't think of that.  They didn't look thick enough to support all that weight and wind force but I'm no engineer.  Makes sense...!

Good chance they were heading to the "Bald Hills Wind Farm" as I passed three or four empty trucks with large floats heading back towards Melb yesterday arvo.

Keep seeing these mast posts heading north on the Hume FWY. The Vestas branding confirms they're for wind farming.

Not as funny as you think.
I was involved with the escorting of all the concrete bridge beams to the Melbourne EastLink project nearly 10 years ago. All at night. These were up to 50m long. The used to run a generator on the rear of the outfit to help power all the lights due to voltage drop from the prime mover.

By the time we had finished all the operators had moved onto battery powered LED clearance lights. Lots easier to rig up each trip without so much cable.
