So you think campers with genies are annoying
« on: October 02, 2014, 09:15:11 PM »
Just thought I would share this with you all.
Was out on a boat last weekend on pittwater in Sydney staying overnight for 3 nights . Each night we were moored in a beautiful anchorage and what would you know ?
The people moored near us on each night had gennie running on the back of the boat 2 power a 42 inch tv ...... Ahh the serenity !!!
So not just a camping problem, and sound carries a lot further on water.
On the upside the first night we had a wedding band playing from the shore and they were not half bad :)

Yes gennies annoy the crap out of me too, for the price of a decent gennies you can buy a battery or 2 a big inverter and enough solar to run basically anything you want without noise smell or having to carry fuel. Yep bugger the genny

There are situations, places and times where solar really doesn't work very well.
Gennies do have a place, but they should be used with consideration......

My take is it must be fair sized boat to be able to watch a 42 inch TV. Fair sized boats costs lots to buy a run, so why are they being such cheap skates buying a cheap and noisy genie.

Like mentioned before, some of the better models are whisper quiet and you wouldn’t care if they had it running.

I was wondering the same thing. Most large boats have on board power generator. The Boatenator..

I don't understand it - solar has come a long way and is so much better. There's nothing worse than the sound of a generator to ruin your peaceful camping trip.

During the day, sure, why not, but after 5pm its just frustrating

I know there has been plenty of generator bashing threads but anyway- we have just returned from 3 months up the centre, and down the west coast. The amount of mostly grey nomads that pulled up as close as they could to us, pulled out the genny and pulled out the satelite dish at three o'clock in the afternoon then the tv was at full blast and could be heard over the generator until they went to bed.

These were $100000 rigs which should of had enough built in power the tv no worries. The must not have had charging from the car because anybody who has driven the west coast would know, there is plenty of driving.

Nothing against them in the right place.

We used our generator twice, once at eyres rock when it rained for a few days for an hour mid afternoon ( we have a compressor fridge in our van and were way down the back of the overflow area) to boost the batteries back up and once at Hattah for the same reason.

Anyway, we were just picky with our camp sites when we could be.

On the satellite issue, we saw some serious desperadoes who even cut trees down to get some tv.

Generators need to be inverter (quiet type) not normal gennies as they are ridiculously loud at night and in the morning.

Shouldn't be run before 0800 and after 1900.

Ain't that the truth! It's pretty obvious at caravan & camping shows who the "me" generation really is!
