Where do you put the new when it's bigger than the old one!!
« on: September 14, 2014, 04:10:42 PM »
Hi all

We have a 1991 Ti 550 and we have just brought new tyres.

The tyres originally on it were 255/65 R17 road tyres.

We have replaced them with BF Goodrich All terrains which don't come in the same size.  We have gone to 265/65 R17.

We replaced all 5 even though the old spare hadn't been used.

The problem we are now faced with is that the spare doesn't fit in the space under the car.   What have other people done and where is the spare now?

Thanks

Vicki and Graeme

roofrack or rear bar with wheel carrier are your options.

What did I do in this situation?
Put the original size tyre back on the spare.  Most AT tyres these days don't puncture as easy and on the 2 occasions they have, I managed to easy plug them on the road and reinflate.
Keep your spare in it's original size just for the extra emergency and it should be fine for short distances until you can get the original replaced.

If you deflate the spare will it fit in the original spot? Then you just need to carry a compressor with you for the rare time you will get a flat!

Only 13mm difference in diameter when calculating but it seems that the same sizes differ between different manufacturers.

Probably best to move from under car if your going off road as the bead can be unseated
and tyres staked when mounted under car.

Bingo as according to the calculator your origional to new size is only 10mm difference so it should be fine to use the origional size as a spare

That would be fine if all brands of tires measured the same in the same size but they don't.
EG: not all 285/75x16's measure the same..

Check the pathfinder forum at pcoa.org.au - this is somewhat common topic over there.

I believe you can sometimes wedge it in on a slight angle by pushing it as you winch it up.

How about letting some air out, say down to 10 PSI -- it may give you the difference for the tire to fit. Just make sure that you carry a good pump.
