Daytime Safety (Running) Lights For The 'Cruiser 'Tilley

It has been mentioned to me over the past couple of years by several friends & rellies that the 'Cruiser is very hard to see on an open road. After a workmate nearly pulled out in front of me a few months ago & told me the same thing, I've taken to driving with low beam on, however this is fraught with disaster as the age of the vehicle means that there is no alarm for the lights being on when the ignition is turned off or keys removed i.e. Old Fart walks off & leaves lights on!
This happened recently when I'd put the vehicle away around 1 p.m. & the good woman arrives home at 8:30 p.m. & finds the shed has an interior glow. I just managed to start the diesel the next morning!
With the advent of LED Running Lights I have a few questions!
1) Is it legal to fit aftermarket DRLs in Qld?
2) Do they have to be in a certain position?
3) Has anyone done this?
4) Does anyone here market them?
I know they have to be less than 25w & must turn off when the head lights are in use.
Any advice appreciated.

I wouldn't see there being an issue, it would be just like putting spot lights on your vehicle.

Have a search of the Department of Transport sight.

I'm interested to see the result too as I've got an ARB bar with winch & 30" light bar on it. I was thinking of grill mounting but can't make the ADR dimensions then! If on the lower bumper, as in the photo, they may be too close to the indicators?

I think you can get an auto elect to wire up a warning buzzer. Then you wont forget to turn off the lights.
Might be easier than extra lights?

I got a $15 pair of led lights off ebay. They're just stick-ons.
The only thing with DRL's is they have to switch off automatically when headlights/parking lights are switched on.
I had a relay sitting unused on the workbench. Wired it up as 'normally closed' and tapped into the parking lights on the bullbar as the trigger, so the DRL's switch off when the parking lights switch on.

It's a bit of an experiment to see what the longevity of cheap lights is like.

I said the same thing early on! However, living in a rural environment, after doing a few sight distance/visibility tests on our roads I had to admit that the vehicle was harder to see than our other 4x4 in same conditions. Quite scary really!
The buzzer sounds (pardon the pun)a good idea or  maybe an auto on/off with the ignition like motorcycles?

interested to know how and where you are fitting these on your prado?

I was thinking in the split pan on either side of the upright. Not strictly legal as you need 600mm spacing. Other option is to find a round DRL to replace the IPF fogs as I never use the fogs.

Hey Steffo1,
I do a lot of driving out west to the Surat Basin on roads with long straights, you would be surprised how hard it is to see dark coloured cars that seem to blend in with the horizon and its even worse on dusk and dawn when they should have their lights on and dont   The regulars out west all drive with their lights on and it is so much easier to judge their distances away when wanting to overtake. 

So much safer you wont be sorry your doing the right thing

My forester, and it think most subies, run headlights and parkers on ign on only, I leave mine on 90% of the time and the car just turns em off for me. There must be a rule that says parkers must be able to operate without a key because there is a battery-kill switch on top of the steering wheel that turns on the parkers. A lot of people don't realise what it does and run the battery down not realising they've turned on the he parkers.
