Fire in the Camper

I've thought about this for a while now we have a camper, don't what is the best but I found this at Aldi for $25,should be better then nothing.

Just remember, don't leave it next to the stove. Leave it where you can get it if there is a fire.

make sure your on a boat first.... those marine types dont like dry land much....

And remember that the powder in those extinguishers can pack down solid if not rotated regularly ...
A mate had  an engine bay fire while parked on his driveway  and only got a couple of blasts of propellent and very  little powder out of his [ not Aldi brand ], luckily a neighbour came running over with a larger powder type one  from his garage..

Every 6 months I just hold mine upside down and give them a few taps with a rubber mallet and then shake to see if I can feel the powder sloshing around in there. If I can't feel anything I just get another one

This is what the cfa guy who checks our extinguishers at work told me to do.

Good advice about giving them a tap with a rubber mallet every month or so.

I'd also buy another and let it rip to see how they work. 1Kg won't give you much time to get a fire out, aim at the base of the fire not the flames and just let the whole thing go until it is empty. Fire will quickly reignite if it isn't 100% out.

Do it a big open space as that powder gets into everything and travels a mile.

but I like Jamies idea - you should buy 2 - and see how little they really do and if you do ever need it, you will know how to attack the situation, and how long you have.

You get about 30 seconds if you're lucky out of a 1Kg, just enough time to get something like this out if you do it right.

Had my boat motor catch fire a few years ago (no it wasn't a Jeep thing). Definitely worth grabbing 2 extinguishers and try using one on a camp fire if you've never had to use one. Sometimes less is more.

How does storing/ mounting the unit HORIZONTALLY  help? I always had one rattling round under the drivers seat of the Land Cruiser truck and it never had issues. Should I still be checking, whanging with a mallet, etc?

Best trick is mount them horizontally in the direction of travel.  The stopping/accelerating of the vehicle does a lot to stop the settling.

After working in the anti-fire game for two years only thing I learnt was smallest extinguisher that is any good has to be at least 2kg ABE.

Also if you are doing a lot of dirt roads just rotate the 'FX' each day as that's how long it takes to be hard packed, I tested this with half a dozen 9kg and 700ks of dirt roads and each one got a maybe 1/2kg out of it.......... don't know why they put them on trucks/earthmoving equipment?

lf the powder packs down the propellant wont be able to mix with the powder . grad it tap it in the ground to break up the solid  or wack it with a rubber hammer every now & them . A short test squirt to check working range , then into it from a distance . Sweep the base of the fire till it is subdued or you run out of powder . lf you get to close the propellant will stir up flame & not create a barrier to starve the fire of fresh air . Be careful as its still going to be hot  but not alight .

 Give it a strong tap or 2 on the ground , a brisk shake then into it . check your range , have the fire down wind where possible . Then put it out
