Bush Rats

Any ideas for deterring/scaring bush rats (aka White Tails) when camping. A member on here has suggested to me that they don't like light/s, so, would garden solar lights be any good. He also suggested leaving the bonnet of the vehicle partially up will help keep them out of the engine bay. We have had one bad experience, and to say they are determined is an understatement.
Any other suggestions. They are a protected species, consequently baiting, killing or bringing the moggy along etc is illegal.
Regards

My father in law use those those motion detection toys. Some look like a frogs or owls. as you go past them they'll croak or hoot.  He has a owl on a tree that hoots. He use  to them to keep the possum away.
From memory he got it from bunnings.  No idea on cost.
Life's wasn't meant to be fair.
Well so I've been told. ..

Moth balls seem too keep them at bay ..
They go into your engine bay for the warmth , so lift the bonnet fully when setting up camp and if its a clear night leave it up ..
