Would you fit a scupper vent to a jayco penquin

Has any one fitted a scupper vent to a jayco penquin or jayco camper

I was coming out of lorrella springs with all the vents sealed and dust got in and I am trying to come up with a solution to try and minimise it getting in

Yes when I had the eagle I fitted one. I used a marine scupper vent from whitworths.
I also made some coreflute covers that Velcroed to the fridge and door vents while traveling.
This seamed to make a big difference compared to the other eagle travelling with use who only had the vent covers.

I was thinking about fitting one to our Hawk but the dust from our vehicle travels over the roof of the camper, so it would just be letting more dust in.

Something you would have to check first.

Oh, forgot to mention that I fitted a air cleaner on the inside as well. I will try and find some pics.

I fitted scupper vent and made some alluminium propellor plate covers up for the fridge & door vents on our 2011 Hawk OB.
Also added a 1/4 turn lock to the door to make it seal better.

Definitely worth the effort .

I would (and have) fit a pair of Seabird ventilators. Cheap and come from marine shops.
Don't have to worry about closing it in the rain, they work and don't corrode.
Either way no, matter what you go with I suggest you fabricate to fit an air filter on the ceiling below it to filter out the dust etc and catch all the insects.

Pic 1 & 2 shows the vents on the roof
Pic 3 shows the cover over the filter on the ceiling to hide the actual filter that was from Repco (HT holden).  The cover is a plastic pot plant tray that is a neat fit over the circular filter to hide it and is far enough away from the ceiling not to restrict airflow. Just undo the screw in the centre to remove it all to clean out the dust and bugs. Amazing what accumulates in there. Had to fabricate my own attachment mechanism.

This along with exterior vent covers and a few other minor details was my dust exclusion by positive pressure system. It worked extremely well and no dust got inside and we did the GRR and a fair bit of gravel around WA & NT. Needed both vents too IMO.

Have no more pics as I sold that camper for a more comfortable Jayco Outback Poptop Caravan

The set up I mentioned earlier is the same as Rebs (I actually used his idea) the seabirds work well and do not let any water in. I didn't cover my air filter inside, I bought a fancy looking air filter from supercheap that looked ok.

It does.....that's why you have a filter !!!

But being up out of most of the dust. it shouldn't be a problem !!

It does not actually. They are collecting clean air unless:-
a. you are going very slow with a tail wind.
b. your vehicle creates a dusty airflow over the roof.
c. you are following another vehicle too close.
d. you pass a vehicle coming from the opposite direction that has kicked up a lot of dust.

They are like the vent system on your car.
If you set it for outside air you get clean air (ignoring exhaust and invisible odours) but if you leave it like that and drive in the above situations you will get dust in the car.

Anyway that's whats my testing proved.

I cleaned mine before i sold it and there was maybe a tea spoon of dust in the cleaner.
I think the dust will only come in as you start up and get up to 40kmh or so , then the pressure is created and very little new air will go through the scupper as you have covered all vents and the pressure is maintained.
If you didn't cover your other vents then air would continually draw through and bring dust in with it.

Just wondering if the dust is more of an issue on the older models that had an internal vent near the fridge.
I've got a new swan, besides the door will dust be an issue?

We did about 100 or so km of dirt on the weekend ranging in speed from 10 to 60 km/h with our 2011 hawk and the main dust we got in was on the floor from the door and on the bench top from the top fridge vent. It was only a light coating and there was nothing on the beds.

I normally tape over the vents but I completely forgot on this trip so I was glad when we didn't get too much in. Most of the dust seemed to come in from the door and also the fridge vent in the top of the bench - not really around the fridge itself.

Where in the Avon Valley are you Aussiex - I'm in Northam.

So as the new campers don't have an internal vent on the bench(swan anyway not sure of others) looks like just the door will be an issue. As long as all the cable access holes etc are sealed.
I'll put some filter material in the door then & all will hopefully be sweet  ;D
Some aquarium filter stuff should do the job.
