Caravan owners are urged to remain vigilant while a serial caravan thief is active in Melbourne’s outer suburbs.
The man has successfully stolen a caravan in Patterson Lakes, was caught in the act trying to take another in Monbulk and was seen sizing up a third also in the Monbulk area.
He has first stolen two number plates from a vehicle at a Rowville golf course to use to disguise his getaway vehicle on 30 June.
He has then attended a house on Old Emerald Road in Monbulk and hitched up the $50,000 caravan to his four-wheel drive ute about 3.50pm
The female owner has arrived home to catch the man about to drive off.
After being confronted by the owner, he has quickly unhitched the caravan and left.
It’s believed the same man also targeted a caravan for sale on Fairydale Road in Monbulk about five hours later.
The man made arrangements to see the caravan about 6pm but didn’t turn up.
The owner was then at home when he noticed a car pull up in his driveway about 9pm.
He asked the man what he was doing and he said he wanted to test whether he could hook the caravan up to his car.
The caravan owner told the man to leave which he did.
In the most recent incident, the man robbed an elderly couple of their dream holiday after stealing their caravan in Patterson Lakes
Investigators have been told the burglars stole the $50,000 caravan from the driveway of a house at Portal Place Patterson Lakes sometime between 12pm-3pm on Thursday 10 July.
The owners, an elderly couple, had recently purchased the caravan and were planning to leave this week on a road trip holiday to Darwin.
The caravan is a 2013 JAYCO Sterling (21’ 6) with registered number V 70482.
Investigators have released CCTV images of a suspect vehicle, a white 4x4 with tray seen towing a similar caravan in the area at the time of the theft and the a photo of the same model caravan.
The man, believed to be bald, has been known to wear a number of hair pieces including a reggae-style beanie with brown dreadlocks, sometimes tied back, and also a wig with straight brown hair.
Police urge caravan park staff and other caravan holiday makers to keep a watch-out for the stolen caravan which has a large “Do not Overtake “sticker across the rear underneath the window.
