tHE BIG lAP WITH A SOFT FLOOR C/T
« on: July 14, 2014, 08:20:46 PM »
Hi Guys
In 18 months we are setting off on the big lap, now my question is to all the people with soft floor campers where and what do you do each night as regards sleeping, do you stop at truck stops with the caravans etc  or do you find somewhere else away from everybody so you can open up the tent part of it.
This is just for a one night stop.
Thanking you in anticipation

We used to just open the camper up and throw the awning over the top.
10 minutes and we would be in bed...

Most towns generally have campgrounds, say at the local show ground where you can camp. Heck I'm at paradise point on the Gold Coast and there is a free camp about 2km from my house, in fact  2 of them. Only over night stays but that's ok when your on the rd

Wiki Camps has been s god send for us on our current trip. Places like Lake Hart and Agnes Waters would never have crossed our mind and they were great spots just off the main highway.

It doesn't really matter, I remember setting up my 13 foot tent between two caravans and around the comunual concrete table north of Elliot in the NT.
For overnight stops you may get sick of setting up your tent every night, so that's why I'm looking around for something quicker.
Regards
Angus.

I think there's also an issue about finding suitable ground.  Soft-floors don't really like gravel or concrete much, and also may require a fair bit of level ground if there are people sleeping on the floor part.
A lot of overnight stops aren't exactly suited to soft-floors.

We did 4 weeks in ours, travelling most days. As mentioned you can set up the main part of the camper in fairly quick time, we have 3 kids and each child has a stretcher bed that they pull out of its bag and stand up themselves, sleeping bags stretched out on the main bed while travelling, pillows in the car. As to locations we did a mixture of parks and free camping, free camping you just need to find the right spot with minimal sharp rocks etc that can stab thru the soft floor. We dont have a kitchen in ours so getting cooking happening always took a bit of extra time.  By the end of it though we were talking about simpler faster setups, got a bit tedious eventually..  We are thinking swags for the kids and a different camper. Maybe one day..

Mate the truck stops these days are usually awsome

Truckies are usually a fussy lot so most of the stops we stayed at in VIC, SA, NT and WA had nice showers and facilities.

A lot of other campsites we stayed at were from local advice on the way
