Why do people modify their 4x4/camper just for looks?
« on: July 12, 2014, 11:12:43 PM »
I was just thinking that a lot of people seem to spend $$$ and time on their 4x4/camper just to make it look good. Just wandering why it is important to them?

Yes, it's their money and they can do what they want but that is not my point. I'm just wandering why people spend money/time modifying just for the sakes of looks? Pride? To impress mates/others? Why not?

I can't think of any mod on my camper or 4x4 that has been done for looks. I like my stuff to look good but that is often a by-product of the modification. EG lift and new tyres always looks but that is not why it is done.

Just thought I would throw this out there, seemed like the right time....

Because they think thats what you need to do.

A bit like bullbars when you live in the city and the nearest Big Red Roo is 4500 million miles away.

(havent had a bullbar fight for a while ...... )   >:D

Living where you do know Dazzler it might pay to get a bullbar, You get a few stinkers and a few greys ...down along that stretch of coast roads .
Daughter had a close call with one not long ago near Salt .

Can you give some examples of what you mean.
My camper when heading down the road looks like it did when it left the factory. + A pole holder and awning. ( bit hard to disguise them)
To look at the Patrol it has a lift, tyres, snorkel and scrub bars with an occasional roof rack. (Patrols just naturally look good).

Probably the same reason everyone has to have an iPad or iPhone do people need this stuff NO but everyone else does so they all have to as well. Yes there is no reason to have half the stuff we have on the tug or camper but the advertisers of the world tell us otherwise. It's called keeping up with the Jones's and as much as people say they don't care about that stuff society will not let us.  ;D

Because they prioritize "looks" coming 1st over other things!

I find it funny when I see a 4x4 with Big Wheel/low profile tyre combos

I would like to see that one in the sand!

Such is life!

We have a Dmax LS-U and a 4x4 Camper T, we modified ours so we get reliability & the ability to stop anywhere when we do our trips way out west.
Oh and the mags look pretty trick.

l personally blame the likes of ARB , TJM , & all the others that make all the bits & pieces . Then they print glossy pics of total kitted rigs out there somewhere  & totally dirt free .. Has anybody test run the self washing kit on any rigs . Every time l go anywhere l end up covered in dust /mud depending on the season . Mine never looks as good as those in the pages of the cattlsdogs .. Might have to look in to some sort of scam    >:D

I can't recall seeing any mods just for looks on either my CT or anyone else's CT. I am not saying there isn't any, I just can't recall seeing any.

I think you're being a bit subjective here, mate. I'm certain everyone with bling has it for function not looks. I mean, I'm sure the  Playdo I saw at an inner city bottlo recently certainly would have needed the Maxtrax, fluoro handled shovel & kangaroo jack that were on his roof rack as the driveway approach was quite steep ;D

Hahahahahahaha.  :cup: :cup:

My 4x4 looks good and the camper. The camper, I haven't done anything too, as it's an ultimate, so don't need too   ;D ;D and the patrol, all it's mods get used for what they are there for. Including the bullbar, yes I live in a big smoke, but you'll be surprised at the amount of roos I see on the side of the rd around the GC, and not just roos, but bike riders, and crap drivers   ;D ;D

Why stop there what about the people who buy new Commodores who lower them and change the exhaust and wheel/Tyre combo. I am sure none of them are going near a race track anytime soon.
I might have a word to the couple of old blokes at my local shopping centre who have streamers in the handle bars of their motorised scooters. Pretty sure they serve no purpose.

You already answered the question.  Welcome to the world of the modified car culture.  Personalization, new ideas/technology, dare to be different.  Doesn't matter if its Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Ricers, 4by's or trailers, some people just like to be a little different.  Might not be to everyones taste or liking, but the person who's rolled up their sleeves and done all the work to get it to their liking could not give a rats a$#e what you or I think.

take it from someone who's hit a roo in the wifes Dunnydore in the Western surburbs of Brisbane, they don't just live in the outback  ;) have also seen deer run across the road infront of me out Bellbowrie way aswell, not saying it's a regular thing to need to avoid, but they are certainly out there.
as to modding the camper...only thing i have done to ours is add a space case to the front to store our camp chairs in and added a swing away rear bar to get some weight towards the back of the camper. i bought the camper we have for the very reason it didn't need to be modded, i got sick of doing that with our old caravan.
