Camper trailer numbers sold by brand.
« on: July 08, 2014, 08:47:28 AM »
A recent discussion with one of the camper trailer manufacturers has caused me to contemplate who would now be considered the largest selling brand in the country. If the information I have is correct, and I have no sales figures provided to prove it, I am just about to have my favorite hat for breakfast. Due to the tone and nature of the discussions I have had, I will not name the brand, but I was informed by a company rep that they have 20,000 units in the market now.   So my question to the forum is who do you reckon is the biggest in the market on numbers sold? And if the figure of 20,000 sold is true, just how big is the camper trailer market and what is the value to the economy?

http://www.crva.com.au/caravan-and-campervan-registrations-in-australia-top-500000

Some findings from the report include:

?Caravan registrations increased 5.96% to January 2012 the highest recorded against other motor vehicle types;
?Caravans continue to represent 89% of total registrations with campervans totalling 11%;
?Victoria has the largest fleet of caravans, Queensland the highest percentage of campervan registrations;
?Western Australia has the highest combined caravan and campervan registrations per head of population at 29.8 per 1,000;
?Tasmania continues to have more than twice as many registered campervans per head of population than any of the mainland states;
?The average age of Australian campervans is 17.6 years, with all states except Western Australia and South Australia showing a decrease in average age over the past five years;
?Camper trailers continue to make up the greatest number of caravan registrations by far, although there is a growing trend towards caravans in the 1.6 to 3 tonne range reflecting the popularity of family vans;
?Mandurah in Western Australia has the highest combined number of caravan and campervan registrations followed by Bundaberg (Qld), Fraser Coast (Qld), Toowoomba (Qld), and Albany (WA).  Gladstone in Queensland saw the greatest percentage increase of those postcodes with greater than 1,000 registrations at 13.2%; and
?In 2012 campervans travelled approximately 255 million kilometres, the equivalent of Sydney to Darwin via Melbourne and Adelaide per campervan.

If the figures are correct campertrailers account for somewhere over 50,000 units in total (11% of registrations).  With the number of brands out there its hard to see how many make $$.

but then again define "market"...
in a shop waiting sale?
in a warehouse awaiting selling could also be defined as "in the market"...
work out how many you'd sell a month to sell that many in what 4yrs?

cause you sell the most also means jack nanny about quality...

To answer the question asked, the rv market seems to be upwards of 20,000 units per annum.

Using the 11% factor one can assume the CT market is approximately 2200 to 2400 units per annum.

If someone has 20,000 units in the market right  now there should be some great bargains out there!! They may, however, have sold 20,000 units over the past 25 years?

I would go for Quality not quantity any day, 20,000 units means sweet FA, all that means is they turn over a lot on trailers,
doesn't mean they are any good or bad for that matter.
We had one of those and wouldn't buy another one. Our new camper is much better quality for what we paid.
m2 cents.

Cheers

I am sure  they have not been around 25years. I did ask if the 20,000 units have been sold and registered. Seems like a lot to me and as we travel around I can't remember seeing a lot on the road. I do see plenty of Jayco camper trailers though. It looks as though every second family is camped in one.  :laugh: It would be interesting to get sales figures for camper trailers, as opposed to caravans or motorhomes.

Not because I own one but I think it would be hard to beat the Jayco campers. I went to on a factory tour and they churn them out like no tomorrow in 2 factories the size of the MCG with waits for up to 6 months.

That number sounds rediculous. That camper manufacturer whom we don't speak of used to spruke that they were selling 50 units per week on the 4wd action dvd's. Even that huge number is only 2600 per year.

Jayco reportedly sell ~450 units per month. I'm not sure if that is total sales of their caravans and campers, but it's still a healthy number.

The three letter brands do seem to churn them out, due in no small part to the massive amount of advertising they do with 4WDA I'd bet.

NSW similarly doesn't have a category for camper trailers, only caravans. Plenty of folks have mistakenly registered theirs as a box trailer. Caravans (and campers) don't attract stamp duty where box trailers do.

its quite possible.  anecdotally, there are over 1000 campers for sale on gumtree, and from my extensive searching over the past 6mths, a lot of these are the imported brands.  either they have been bought and turned out to be lemons, and/or the owners have decided camper trailer holidays aren't for them and are selling up.
I reckon these companies captured that market demographic that thought the lifestyle would suit them and the trailers were cheap enough to take the plunge, and could be re-sold at same value if not their cup of tea.
I'd say that 1000 for sale on gumtree is a lot - hence why the 2nd hand market is cheap, and these are hard to offload for anything near what people paid for them.  this affects quality campers also.

just my opinion - only fact here is there are 1053 campers for sale on gumtree alone!

Agree Jonesy, our KK is registered as a caravan not a camper/trailer.

SA doesn't have a registration category for camper trailers either. Just registered as a box trailer.
