selling something you love
« on: July 04, 2014, 08:28:42 PM »
ok, so I am forced to sell my first love - yes, my beloved boat!  Wife wants a house and after much umming and arring and delaying, I realised we needed the $$ for that more than I selfishly needed my boat.
she's not pretty, but to me she's the apple of my eye.  :'(

I'm actually feeling pretty low at the moment - like I just lost my best mate.  :'( :'(

so - in the spirit of me totally feeling like crap - tell me about something you love that you had to give away or sell, and share in my misery!

A few years back now I had to hand in my semi-auto and pump action firearms...got reimbursed pretty well  ;D

Then a few more years later I had to hand in my larger calibre handguns...ended up getting rid of all my handguns and equipment...get even better reimbursement than the longarms.  8)

Missed it at the time as it was a club thing with mates - and had been shooting competitively for so long.....but got back into camping and 4WD'ing so the family were happy...and me  ;D

About to sell my house which for the past 7 years I have almost built all by myself. Got it just about right but its time for a change. Will be hard to walk out of it after all the sweat and tears poured into it.

The upside is the family is moving to something with more room and hopefully a much better lifestyle, its scary but cant wait

Hard to say but if the time is right for the house then go for it, you will find the op for another boat will come around soon enough. I've had 17 boats so have got used to passing them on (usually after spending lots of money on them)

Just trade the wife in. Ya don't need a house that bad.

You can never get a perfect wife, but if you have the perfect boat.... must tell you something.

If God wanted us to stay married for ever until death boat do us part, why did the big fellow invent divorce?

Food for thought huh.

At the end of the day its only a boat. We did the same thing 20 odd years ago, and I was more than happy to use the funds from the boat to help finance the purchase of a home. Nowadays we use the equity in our home to finance the toys, happy days.

I sold my valiant a few years ago. It was a great car, purple, v8, loud, fast. I had a company car at the time and due to my wife getting car sick in it due to the old school fumes it didn't get out of the garage a lot. Not sure where the cash went in the end, probably the bottomless mortgage. Wish I still had room for a project/classic car but I don't and wouldn't get time to play with it. Sinking my hobby funds into push bikes now, at least I can fit a dozen in the garage at once.

I sold my beloved twin cockpit skiboat that restored myself to buy my first house, along with a go kart and bike.

11 years later I still miss the boat, but don't regret the decision.

Yes and no.  The last 2 years prior to selling it didn't get used as much as it used too.  Had about 5 mates with boats, mine being the smallest and slowest I started leaving it at home and chipping in for fuel to my mates.  Still was a hard decision, as I had it for 8 years and spent a solid 12 months doing a hull up restore, but I wanted a house more.

Cool boat!!!!!

Thanks.  Started off like below and at the time (mid 90's) I thought a pearl blue/white paint job looked cooler.  If I had my time over I'd paint it the same colour and keep the period (we think the boat was late 60's) steering wheel, screen and interior.

Had a Holden 186S with twin strommies, Yella Terra head and a Wade cam.  Direct drive (no dog clutch), probably struggled to crack 35 - 40mph and handled like junk, but man we had some fun with it!

About 8 years ago i had to sell my Honda VFR, with one young child and another on the way we just couldnt afford the 3rd rego. I almost cried as it rode off down the street, but sort of glad i sold it at the time. Fortunately i wasnt forced to sell my pride and joy which is a 1958 FC Special sedan that i have had since i was 17, VFR has been replaced with a Triumph Daytona T595 :)

:'( sold my motorcycle last week it was my pride and joy and the nicest bike I have ridden for ages. The upside my wife agreed to take the kids out of school for a term next year and travel the country in the camper. Funds are needed for the trip. So yep I get it happy sad??
Win win brother.  Can't complain about that. So many special memories to be had.
