What would you do?

Here is a poll for you all. I have a 1994 GXL turbo diesel auto which is a great touring vehicle and very comfortable to drive. Previously a one owner with 380K on it and a known service history. Runs like a dream but needs an injector service and has had the injector pump rebuilt. It's set up as a tourer with Stratos seats, new audio system, MOMO steering wheel, drawer system and onboard water tanks. Upgraded brakes with braided lines, rear ARB locker and compressor, 2" suspension lift with rear airbags as we tow a camper. Twin battery system and upgraded headlight wiring and globes plus a lightbar. All leds in the interior lights. ARB steel front bar and Kaymar rear bar with one wheel carrier plus a steel full length ARB roof rack. Phew!!! Now here is the question, would you just have the motor rebuilt when it's needed or if you had the money upgrade to a newer vehicle and fit it out to replace the 80 Series. Hold your tongue when I say that a current model Pajero GLX diesel auto would be the ideal replacement, considering our future plans.

Yeah i know everyone raves about the 80 and all that crap but i look at it this way

Yes you can rebuild the engine

But every other part including the chassis itself is now 20 years old in that vehicle so what happens next, rebuild the gearbox, transfer case, front diff, rear diff, replace axles, replace brakes, suspension, suspesions mounts

You will get to a point that the rebuilding will cost more than the cars worth

And, it is a classic 4wd that is still holding it's value well. Compared to a 1994 Pajero with the same mods @ $7,000 a good 80 Series is getting more than double that.  It's got some life left in it yet but the day will come when older vehicles are legislated off the road.

If you have the funds/ability I'd trade/upgrade - half the fun is the build, adding accessories etc to another vehicle.

I'm in the same boat with our '97 Disco1 300TDi. 340000 trouble free on the clock & in good nick with no apparent issues, serviced regularly by experts & no beach work. If & when the time comes I'll be leaning toward an engine rebuild or swap. If the 80 is solid I'd be reticent to ditch it.

If all that stuff has been done, it's a no brainer to keep it. Besides, 380k is only just run in for an 80  Seriously, if it's set up the way you want it already, you'd have to find something with all the fruit or spend a heap on extras for the newer rig.  I really like pajeros and would own one very happily, but even though the 80 is getting on it'll probably still outlast the newer cars.

Yeah, been through that with my GQ. Put a new donk in it and drive it like ya stole it. Remember it has real metal in it even though it is a Tojo.

I sold my 1998 100 series with all the stuff i liked done, it needed an engine rebuild in the next 5 years but I sold it with 300k on the clock and got 20k for it ..

Had I rebuilt the motor it would have added another 10K with all the extra bits you do ..so in essence a 30K vehicle.. I bought a 55K 2006 100 series 2006 V8 for $38.5K .

So for 8.5K more i got an 8 year newer car with better motor and 245K less K,s on it..I have now added about 5K worth of gear to that so say $13.5K $$ .over the top of a re-build and 23.5K total upgarde .. funny how you see things depending on the direction you want to see them ..

Sometimes I think i should have just driven my old girl into the ground and then done a re-build..and i would have had alot more $$$ in the bank

comes down to $$$ at the end of the day IMHO ..if you have the $$$ to upgrade then all good .. but if you have to borrow and pay interest then better off with your 80 and just save for potential re-build later...

alll that said a re-built motor will not get you any more at sale time or when insurance writes you off as my mate has just learnt the hard way. ..he spent 15K upgrading everything only to be offered 9K for the whole car under market value..??   

Hard decision ..I chickened out but sometime think I would have been better off with the old girl ..live axles and all that fruit

Well if you dont need that solid front axle then the Pajero it should be I reckon.
