Re-registering from Qld to NSW
« on: July 04, 2014, 08:18:51 AM »
Hello All,

Google searching hasn't really helped me with a question in regards to re-registering my trailers in NSW. We moved interstate a few months ago and I have been extremly slack etc in not getting my trailers registered here. Have finally got around to organising a "Blue" slip inspection but have been advised that I will need to get them weighed prior to being inspected. Both of the trailers have compliance plates on them and they were registered in QLD previously. This doesn't sound right to me so am wondering if anyone here would know the correct requirements? I have been on the RMS website but due to my lack of searching ability I am still in the dark.

Please help a frustrated camper out.

Thanks

Rod

You say they "were" registered in QLD previously. If they are currently unregistered, that may be the reason for the necessity of weighing. From my understanding its far easier to transfer registration between states rather than reregister an unregistered vehicle.

Heres a link to NSW roads and maritime ... http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/registration/getnewrego/interstatevehicles.html. It doesn't mention weighing, but does refer to "The Unregistered Light Vehicle Inspection Report", which may very well require a current weight certificate.

Cheers.

Prior to moving back from Qld our camper trailer rego expired and I made a mercy dash across the border to change the camper to NSW rego. I too, was told it needed a weigh certificate, no blue slip though as it was less than three months expired. I was given the impression all trailers changing rego needed to be weighed.

I shot off to the tip and had it weighed (tips are fast and easy for this) and scooted back only to be told I didn't have front reflectors and so shot off to super cheap.

Now back in NSW I have the boat trailer to do. I'm not looking forward to having to spend a day launching and securing the boat, just to go and weigh the boat trailer.

If you find a loop hole that says I don't need to do this let me know.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply Malcolm and others. Sorry more my wordsmithing they "are" currently registered. I have seen the information you have refered to and my understanding is that if they are not registered in NSW and you are living in NSW then they are basically not registered. My understanding is that the vehicle report you refer to is the NSW Blue slip hence what i am trying to clarify. It might be easier to just give the RMS a phone call rather than debate the issue with the workshop people.

You'll need a blue slip, obtainable at most mechanical workshops. You will probably also require a weight-bridge certificate, but see if you can avoid that, as the compliance plate should have the weight stamped on it and you might find it weighs a lot more than originally stamped and NSW rego price is based on weight (in bands).

Your camper is registered, though you have an obligation to transfer it to NSW if this is your place of residence, though it suits many not to, for price or compliance reasons.

Have just recently registered a Jayco van in NSW that had Vic rego when we purchased it. I needed the Blue Slip but no weight ticket required as that info was on the Vin plate and also the old rego papers.and this was sufficent for the inspection.
Can you leave them registered in Qld as you may save a dollar as NSW don't miss you except for trailers under 250kg with sub 750kg GVM , but they have these in their sights now.

Thanks for the replies. Contacted RMS by phone and was initially told that I needed weighbridge certificate. When I asked are you sure they went and checked with their supervisor and then came back and said that as long as the Tare weight is on your compliance plate and it is built by a manufacturer then I don't need to. That was a relief as it now means I don't have to unload the CT and remove the tent etc.

The 2nd trailer (box) is a different story as the compliance plate hasn't been filled out other than the VIN so looks like I am stuck in the process.

Why does everything have to be so hard? ???

Don't think this would be right.    (Based on how I know Vic law, which is very similar to NSW) if it is temporarily in NSW it is  okay, however the moment you are permanently in the state, that is where it is to be registered.  (Also as shown on RMS website)

#jonesy I reckon you are correct otherwise I wouldn't be bothering. Had a mate suggest that i get a Qld PO box and just get a mail re-direction. Would be a hell of a lot cheaper but I don't want to play around with it in case it gives me problems legally and / or with insurance if I ever need it.

I had an Uncle, who lives in QLD, give me his trailer 18months ago. When I brought it down into NSW I went to register it in my name. Even though it was, at the time, registered in QLD, I had to get a weighbridge ticket and a blue slip in order to transfer the rego into a NSW rego
