For the motorbike fans

This is in Wellington Museum NZ. Thought it was pretty cool and relevant with the passing of our own Jack Brabham as Britten also built this himself.

So far ahead of it's time when it was built I'm sure this bike was nearly lost in the big earthquake but they managed to save it.

There wouldn't be many people like this left in the world. Would have been a great experience to spend a couple of days while they were putting the thing together.

Here's another interesting thing I came across the other day. Although this was only 10 Kim's from home. It was in the shed of a bloke I took a chainsaw to get serviced. I noticed sheets over a few bikes which you could see were speedway bikes. We got talking and I mentioned the current crop of Aussies doing well but speedway wasn't as popular as back in Ivan Mauger, Phil Crump days. He said, "funny you mention that" and pulled back the sheets!!!!!!
This guy is a legend mechanic of speedway bikes around the world and also raced himself. Mauger got him to do all his mechanics over the years.

Max told me that Ivan lives in Runaway Bay, a northern suburb of the Gold Coast and unfortunately has severe dementia.

back when they sounded like speedway bikes.. that roar was stunning at the Sydney showgrounds back in the day...

many used A747 = which they still sell accordin to their website.

Hey bird is that a 400/4 in the background behind the enfield? BTW just watched the britten doco. Thanks for posting the link.  That was a golden age for bike racing.

How on earth did you work that out? Rode one of them once, got off a Kawa Z900 onto the 400/4 and felt I could walk faster. Some guys were able to wring the necks off them though and might have been my "slight frame" that slowed it down.  :laugh: :laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

Hey it was a challenge.  Especially as I viewed it on my phone. Could be wrong though.  Although the 400 had a uniquely shaped tank and the word Honda was written in a very identifiable font on it. As I said I could be wrong....

it makes me wonder where all these bikes ended up over the decades.. some of these things you never see .. 350/4 400/4 500/4 etc and kawa's etc.

I think a lot ended up at the wreckers and sold for scrap. I am still on the lookout for a GS1000S to do up but are getting silly money now. Honda Fours and Kwaka 900's are pulling even more stupid dollars.

Stripped at wreckers. Put in tubs.  Then crushed as no-one wanted them.  I was trying to do up a yamaha 500 20 years ago.  Nothing obtainable from the factory.  Bikes and bits and parts and pieces had both got out of the older stuff as it didn't pay.  There was no eBay or Internet and I had few skills or connections and little money. 15 years on as the world has shrunk and markets have grown for after market parts makers.  it is now much easier.
Having said that no one would or should ever consider restoring a XS250 yammy or similar.  Bikes like that should just be forgotten.

Snowy still has his sittin in the shed.. blue and white... bought it new, been sittin in the shed since late 80's. the prick wont part with it though :(

Agreed there are some bikes should be kept for posterity and some should be forgotten. I was a Suzuki rider for many years (GS750E and GS1100G) so the GS1000S was the drool bike for my generation. I did have an aircooled RD350 as my first road bike which gave me some respect for power.
The bike that this thread is about is one cool machine though.
If ever anyone goes through Tamworth NSW there is a private bike museum there with some very droolworthy machines.
