hayman Reese or factory tow bar

Just after some thoughts on whether I should get factory toyota bar or go for aftermarket hayman Reese and whhat are the differences if any
will be towing a jayco hawk

Typically HR bars are a neater fit. What vehicle is it for?

Something bullet proof like a heavy duty towbar I personally would be looking at price first and secondly looking at how they fit (IE: looking for the one that hangs down the least)

With a previous 4WD I went aftermarket because it was $400 cheaper. The car salesman was surprised because he thought the 12 month warranty he was offering was more important that saving $400.

I bought an OE bar from a Toyota spare parts dealer on eBay. More than happy. D4D might remember them.

if it is a new vehicle i personaly like OE cause if there is any dramas you can just take it back to the dealer

I have had both. HR on the Troopy and OM on the 100 series. I think both are quality and very similar. What are the prices you were quoted?

We got the Holden tow bar on our 2013 Colorado   Four months later my brother bought a 13 Colorado with an after market bar. It's exactly the same , except for a Holden sticker. All the other stickers are the same. As long as it's rated for your tug ,go for the cheaper one.

Hayman is manufactured by Cequent ( Manufacturing division of Trimas ), a fair whack of OE bars world wide are manufactured by Trimotive ( OE manufacturing division of Trimas ). Same manufacturer, same quality, sometimes eerily similar design, hmmmmm.
Do your research and get the best price.

Same with my Navara.
Exact same bar as a mates H R, bit mine had a Nissan sticker and I paid $500 more...

Maybe do some research on wiring looms for the tow bar. I recently bought an NW Pajero and had an after market towbar put on at $690 from memory as opposed to $880 for the Mitsubishi one, bargain.    When I wired up for trailer brakes there's a loom goes in the front ($90) which is pretty easy to install and all plug in which is great. The loom at the back however is $380 or similar and has relays etc in it. I've presently tapped in to the wire for the trailer brakes at the back plug but would like to put the loom in to have it done properly. If I do, my "bargain" will leave me a couple of hundred $ worse off.  So, as I said, it might be worth researching what's included in the factory one from a wiring point of view.

I did some ringing around today, cheapest was$ 880
I then rang another guy who said $930 with box as the car lights are now led the trailer will keep shorting the car fuse
I assume the factory one would include this box as well
I think I may just go factory as it seems there are no real advantages with after market, plus toyota should do a neat job ie cutting into rear bar etc??

Just make sure the aftermarket bar is the same design as the OME.  I will never forget the Commodore sedan at work years ago that had ripples in the rear quarter panels running down from the lower corners of the rear window to the top of the wheel arches.  The owner decided to save some money and buy a cheaper aftermarket tow bar.  It did not have the long tubular brace that was on the factory bar.  The brace ran forward from the bar up to the heavily reinforced under floor section that supported the rear coil springs.  His unbraced bar resulted in the whole rear section of the body bending down just like a ute with a bent chassis.

At the end of the day if you are buying a new vehicle you should be able to bargain the price down on the tow bar.  If they won't come to the party over a couple of hundred bucks walk away.  I have only ever owned 1 second hand car and that was my first and it belonged to my sister.  I have purchased a lot of new cars and I have never paid much for the accessories I wanted and at least the last three cars I've purchased the towbar has been part of the deal.

Hayman bar is a much nicer fit on the Prado with no bumper cut required at all and the tongue sits a the same height. The ECU(black box) is included in the kit and is a very simple fit. The purpose of the ECU is to allow higher current flow and larger loads to be supplied to the trailer harness. The standard toyota loom, in fact most modern vehicle looms simply do not have the copper to allow high current flows to be drawn directly from the vehicle loom. The ECU allows the lighting circuits to trigger the switching within the ECU and to then allow the loads to be drawn directly from the battery or main power circuit through descent size wiring feeding the ECU. The ECU also assists with pulse wiring circuits, low voltage circuits and single wire pulse circuits on combined brake and tail circuits.

I have the Toyota towbar on the 2013 hilux and wish I had a HR, the Toyota one you can't legally turn the tongue up and put the ball on the top to get my Jayco nice and level so the fridge works well while travelling, you can on the HR apparently.

Just go and get a HR tounge cause that is where the restriction will be for the OE bar

A ball weight of 250kg is the same weather tounge is up or down
