Camper trailer, opinions please, Conqueror vs Tvan
« on: June 08, 2014, 10:58:43 PM »
Hi all,

I am tossing out between conqueror uev 490 and tvan murranji.
I like those two because of their ease to set up and hard roof.

There is me, my wife and 4 year old son.
I do moderate 4 wd driving, like High Country trips, Murray river etc. next year we plan to travel to Cape York as well.

Beside the usual specs, things which our camper also "must" have:
- hard/solid roof
- as little of canvas as possible
- be 1 million percent water proof when set.

I would appreciate your opinions and experiences in the two above mentioned campers.
If you had them, or if you still have one of them, would you buy it again or choose something else etc.

Thank you in advance.

Hi!
We love out Tvan, it is quick to set up, waterproof, quick to put away, we often take our grandson with us so one child is really to accommodate and it will go anywhere you want to go

I have a 490 and I love it. We have a 4 year old and an 18 month old and I like the fact that all 4 of us sleep high and dry off the ground. Its quick to set up and pack up. It has had some teething problems, but all in all I'm happy with it and would buy it again. Happy to answer any specific questions you may have. Cheers

Thank you all.

Bed lengths on both?  I am really tall, 198cm or 6'7.

Also on conqueror, when you lift the roof up, what is the quality of that canvas ( I presume it's canvas), is that really waterproof 100% or would you be suspicious of its performance in a downpour?

"teething problems" - what sort of problems and are they common?

What was deciding thing for both of you to by Tvan an conqueror?

I have a Conqueror 490. Have not had any problems with water leaks. Mine is a 2010 model which is one of their early ones.

When I was looking, it was the clear choice for me for what I wanted at the time, but the Tvan was not on the market then (that I'm aware of).

I had a real good look at the Tvan at the camping show last week-end, and I'm not prepared to say either of them is better than the other.

I think they are both in the same place in the crossover market, and are both exceptional products with excelent build quality, at fairly similar price point. The most noticable differance to me is the Conqueror is an outside kitchen, and the Tvan is an inside kitchen...

The conqueror suites me because I need somewhere for the daughter to sleep, and the Conqueror can sleep 4, but the Tvan only sleeps 2.

Ultimately it comes down to which one do you think will best suit what you want to do with it.

Did you look at the echo4x4 kavango?  We're very happy with ours and it ticks all your boxes.

Hi. My teething problems were leaking storage bins but no issues with the canvas. I think if you are tall it rules the 490 out, because the beds are short. Luckily so am I so not an issue for me.
Good luck with the decision.

Firstly, are you comparing the Tvan with the Conqueror.
Or the Topaz Caravan type camper by Track trailers with the Conqueror?
Tvans as such have been around since at least 2000, in various sizes/styles.
I own a 2009 Canning Model of the Tvan myself.
The later Tvans, 2011 onwards, are slightly larger than the previous Models.
More room inside, with a taller and wider body, than the 2010 ones.
There is a slide out kitchen in the Left side locker on most of them.
Some models were missing the kitchen to lessen the hitch weight.
These were the Sport &/or Yulara models I believe.
Best way to compare, is to try them out.
At least go to a show, and kick some tyres.
As for Altitude enhanced humans.
Track make a Bed extension for the Queen size beds in the Tvan if needed
My Tvan. will go anywhere the 105 Cruiser can tow it.

I really hope so.
There is No inside Kitchen in any TVAN though.
They are all mounted on a slide out, like a deep draw, on the kerb side of the body.
The Kitchen unit slides into a cavity under the Bed area, in front of the mudguards.
The Stove is mounted into the bench top.
There is a sink that slides in, under the stove when packed.
The Sink is supplied with water via a pump and spout, by switch.
Not sure why Spada claims it's inside.

There is  also plenty of room on the Hard floor to sit an adult stretcher for some one.
There  is also the Annexe and the extra room option on the Tvan for more space.

I own a 2009 Canning Model of the Tvan myself.

Hi Cruiser - whats the TVAN like for carrying gear - say 3-4 fold up chairs, a table, pots / pan / kettle. eating gear (plates / cups / cutlery, bowls), separate ensuite tent, shade cloth for the ground, awning, food, clothes, misc wiring (say for solar panel). How much goes inside the unit itself? Is there much that has to be moved just to get into bed?
Thanks,
TC

If you can store the cooking gear in a box under the bed.
There should be room for a fold up table beside that.
Depending on which chairs, they could be stacked on the table.
Wiring shouldn't be a problem, there's a storage locker on Driver's side.
Where the Annexe poles go for travelling.
Depend on how much Canvas you get when you get the Tvan.
I have 3 boxes in the space under the bed, 2 that hold Cooking and Eating gear.
Camp oven and access. included.  Probably too much, if the truth be known.
If it comes with the En-suite and shade sail.  There's not a lot of bulk.
If you get the Annexe as well, then that'll probably end up on the bed for travelling.
Just the canvas that is.  The poles will be inside the front under the bed.
It's obviously not a Caravan with lots of cupboards.
But if your happy enough to travel with gear on the bed, it will take quite a bit.
Depend on how much can be fitted in the Tow Vehicle too.
They are approx. 160Kg at the hitch, depending on which model you get.
Just like any other trailer, they can be matched to the tow vehicle for track and wheel studs.
Track use Alko off road Electric Drum Brakes unless requested otherwise.

If you use the link provided by Oldmate, that takes you to the Track site.
There are current models Pics. and Specs. as well.

The Tvan does accommodate a queen size mattress as a feature also.

Hope that helps.
I don't work for them, I just own one.

We were looking at the 490 a couple of years ago when we were in the market.

About to sign up for one at the Maitland show but their site was on a slight slope. SWMBO who is 5"4 walked up to the kitchen and realised that she could barely see the top of the stove. This ruled it out for us immediately as that would mean I would have to do all the cooking.

Aside from that they appeared to be a well built, well thought out unit that we would have bought.

Hey Bunyip,

If you're that tall you can count out the 490, I'm 6'5" and the 490 was always my dream trailer.. Until I saw it in the flesh, the beds are way too short much to my dismay...and head room is also at a premium, the 440 however does have beds that fit us tall people.. Its become my new favourite..

We decided on the KK Platinum instead. No issues with the length of the bed in that but does not meet other requirements from the OP.

Thank you all for good feedback.

Knowing all my requirements from the first post, are there any other models similar to Tvan and Conqueror 490 that I could look at?

A while back, we were going to purchase a 490 as well. On paper it ticked all the boxes - hard walls, minimal canvas etc. When we saw one, the height of the kitchen bench / cooking area etc was way too high for SWMBO to use.

In the end we went with an Exodus 14 from Complete Campsite. There were some modifications, such as bunks for the kids etc, however we find the design works really well for how we use it.

Our trailer thread - http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=28997.0 has lots of pics.

We were going to buy a TVan after our Cape York Extreme, but decided against it only because of the canvas. Great Camper though. ;D Here in Tully the Canvas just wouldn't dry out without mould forming. We went for the VistaRV and love it.
Sadly because of things beyond my control it's for sale :'( :'( :'(

The length of the beds, particularly the front one, ruled out the 490 for us. The Echo4x4 Kavango ticked this and other boxes. The main bed is 2m and the front is 2.2m. A 6'3" friend can stand in the highest part without stooping. There are compromises though as with everything. The opening into the front bed isn't very big so some acrobatics may be required to get into and out of bed. The stove and sinks in the latest model are lower than in ours. Compare the two models in the thread posted by Rags recently and the one I posted last year (search Kavango). Welcome to look at ours if you're in Melbourne.

I looked at Vista RV and TVan and I felt the Tvan was too small especially if you have a kid. We did end up with an Aussie Swag but if I had to choose again, I would go Vista,490, Tvan. IMO

We're with AdrianLR, having the Echo4x4 Kavango.  We almost bought a conqueror, then discovered the Kavango.  We preferred it over the conqueror due to it's more aerodynamic shape and it's only 2100mm or so tall so is the same height as our hilux with canopy.  The Conqueror is about 2300mm tall i think.  We also found th Kavango came with more inclusions.  We always sleep in the bed in the main body as it can be left made up all the time.  my husband is 6ft2in and finds the bed plenty long enough, though we have a better mattress on top of the foam cushions. So far we have slept in the camper for more than 150 nights and haven't yet set up the inside table, even in Tasmania, and the Vic high country.  We leave the front bed folded if only staying one night, but it's super easy to set up.  We prefer to eat and do most of our living outside by the campfire, if it's really miserable we can hop into bed and watch a DVD or read.

No affiliation, but we have found the dealer very helpful.  We even had the worlds longest test drive, taking their demo unit to Cape York and back when our units delivery was delayed.
